USA CYCLING EVENT - August 8, 2008
I haven't seen anything posted in the regional thread... on my walk last night I noticed a sign posted at the entrance to Orchard Hills, off Portola Pwy (Irvine, CA) that said "Friday, August 8, 2008, from 7am - 7 pm, this road is closed for a special event..." The tagline is then USA CYCLING FED.
Anyone know what is going on? If there is a race in the area I would love to go; in my local area, so close, I would hate to miss it!
The new road that goes back behind the Orchard Hills Shopping Center would be perfect for a criterium especially since there are no houses there yet and the road is wide and quiet. Lots of places to sit and watch riders come by...

Yeah, I'm wondering about that too. There is also a sign on northbound Jamboree just before Portola that mentions something about a rolling closure.

I know they need lots of volunteers for the events including medical staff (nurse, EMT, doctor)... and that is an easy way to see the event and feel good while helping out.

Cool, the men's will be going through Santiago Canyon - then UP Modjeska Grade Rd and back through Modjeska Canyon - the opposite direction of the way I usually do it!

Nope, not anymore:
"I have just submitted the final Tech Guide to USAC this morning for approval. It will be listed on the USAC site, the SCNCA site and at Socalcycling.com today.
Yes, I can confirm that we lost the longer course on Santiago Canyon. We could not get OC approval and CHP would require more people than the promoter could afford to do a full rolling closure on Santiago Canyon.
The 17/18, U23, and Elite men will use the Jamboree and Portola loop. U23 and Elites will do six laps (119 miles) with about 6,500' of climbing. The 17/18 will do 3.5 laps.
Yeah, I hate losing Modjeska, but this course has more climbing, is faster, and is easier for us to keep the riders out of Harm's Way."
