SART ride to the beach

Hey everyone,

A few of us are planning to hit the SART from Green River and ride down to the beach this Sunday morning. It's not an attempt to race down there, we just take a leisurely roll at about 15mph (with some occasional sprinting thrown in for fun) down there to have some lunch, have a couple pints and ride back. It's really about just getting together, getting on the bikes and enjoying some beautiful weather and scenery. If anyone's interested, we plan on heading out at around 8.

As an and added bonus, it would provide an opportunity for us to promote and discuss The Bicycle Lounge, which is our attempt to get a bike collective going in the Riverside area. You can read a little more about that particular endeavor here.

Sounds like fun. When's the Green River start time?

We plan to get to Green River about 7:30 or so. Hopefully, we'll be able to put the pedal to the metal (see what I did there?) by 8, 8:30 at the latest. Hope you can make it.

I'd join but i'm a pretty slow rider (i'd probably average 14mph on SART).

Condorita 08-30-08 07:17 PM

Well, Kareem, that's why we pokey ones start out a little closer to the beach!

Hey, that's probably about what we're going to do. I know I'm late getting this answered, but if you're interested, come on down! We'll be the guys unloading from a tan Tahoe. Got a couple guys riding fixies (1 green, 1 blue/silver) and I'll be on an orange/blue/white Trek 1000.

I'm at the hospital with my Grandma... she had some pretty severe pain so they're keeping her overnight. I don't think i'll be able to make this one. :(

My story:
This was my first metric century (67-ish miles total) on the fixed gear (running 46/17). I started conservatively, pacing myself at about 15-ish -- I don't have all that tech-mo-ligikal speed-measuring mumbo-jumbo strapped to my bike, but that's about the speed the others said they went. We met up with a friend of mine from work just south of Anaheim, regrouped at the end of the trail, and decided to head to the American Legion Post in NB.

Fun ensued. dddave joined us there, we refueled for a few rounds (uh, four rounds I guess....), BBQed some burgers, exchanged filthy jokes and banter for a couple hours, and headed back to the trail.

Pacing myself on the way out was a good idea. The ride back was probably the best I've ever felt on a bike. Again, no numbers on the pace, for you number junkies out there, but by all reports, I was out of sight from the main group. I didn't see them when I looked back, so .... *shrug*. Bottom line is that I felt fantastic: the bike is completely dialed in how I like it, the Brooks saddle is broken in perfectly, and my new bullhorn bars are incredible in the long haul -- and for sprinting up inclines.

The wife and I rode out to dinner later -- my legs were fairly fatigued. This morning, I feel normal.

Maybe others will chime in with their own stories.

jesus, yesterday was a doozie. after splitting off from you guys i went to my gf's and took a 2-hour nap. then, i called my buddy and he was down in newport drinking so i met up with them around 5. we got sandwiches and beer at charlie's chili, went outside, had a couple sparks (had to hide them from the MTB cops), went to our other friend's place and had some beers, went to a greek bar in newport and had sangria and a few beers, then went to class of 47 and had a lot of free beers and sparks, then went to the alley and closed the place down. then we tried to ride our bikes through the drive-thru at jack in the box and they told us to come back at 5am when the restaurant opened back up. my friend kevin gave the car behind us his credit card and told them what we wanted and he paid for their food so they would buy ours. we ater in the parking lot and i rode home at 3am from NB to HB. i can't believe i made it.

It was a great time. Good people and good fun. Brian covered most of it. It was kind of humbling to see a 70 year old guy can pound you into the pavement. Oh, and a girl :-P. I guess I shouldn't have blown my wad on the way down since Brian was a big, pasty flash pulling away from all of us on the way back. Oh, and I should probably remember to eat dinner the night before a big ride.

Between riding w/ the g/f (yay!!) on Sat and Monday and our beach ride, I put in almost a 100 miles over the holiday weekend. Not to shabby.

dddave, dude, how are you still alive? Especially after that burger...good lord. {shakes head}

Humph.
Well, I guess the shoe fits. And it might explain my penchant for Pale Ales.
I ended up amazingly un-sunburned after all day. 70 SPF ftw!!

onthevirg 09-02-08 11:37 AM

BTW...best lines of the day:

Me, "What kind of beer do you have?"

Waitress, "We've got everything."

Me, "OK, how about a Sierra Nevada?"

Waitress, "We don't have that."

Greg, "How about Guiness?"

Waitress, "We don't have that."

Me, "Ummm..."

We finally ended up w/ Sam Adams. I think she was unfamiliar with the meaning of everything. But on the other hand, you can't beat ice cold $3 bottles of beer.

You guys planning on doing this again anytime soon?

Not sure, I know there was some mention of it, but not sure what the scheduling for everyone looks like to actually get it done.

Iamkar33m 09-02-08 12:21 PM

Maybe it would be a good idea to turn this into a regular ride... yes/no maybe so?

I would actually love that. Speaking for myself though, not sure I can manage to garner enough...uhhhh, goodwill w/the g/f to be able to do it more than maybe quarterly since it ends up taking up pretty close to an entire day.

Iamkar33m 09-02-08 12:28 PM

I think monthly would be a good idea, whoever can make it shows up. Think of it as "boys day out" (as opposed to girls night out).

Yeah, don't tell our friend Kimbra that (one of the riders on this ride). She'll grind you to a nub in no time. Another of the group who had lots of things to say about his riding capabilites had far less to say when she was through with him. Just sayin'.

dddave 09-02-08 06:22 PM

oh you mean gr*g?

i fully back doing this one sunday a month. it can (kinda) take the place of BBQ tuesdays. and eff that "boys day out" bullsh*t, kimbra rules. and who wants to hang out with just a bunch of sweaty dudes eating greasy burgers and drinking beer?

I'll take that under advisement. Thanks for the heads up. :D

If Kimbra truly doesnt have a problem with riding with a bunch of sweaty dudes eating greasy burgers and knocking off some cold ones... then by all means she shall be included.
