Cardiff to Julian

How far and what roads? I'm staying down that way for a couple days and would like to ride into the hills. Good ride or not? Any other suggestions?

From Pacific Coast Hwy in Encinitas, Del Dios, Via Rancho Pkwy, Highland Valley, Ramona, Old Julian Hwy, Hwy 78 to Santa Ysabel to Julian. Out and back.

Thanks G. The 20 & 21. I ride well with others, but I have a problem with being on time. Usually, I wake up to late. But, I'm open to suggestions.

You're welcome. There is 5800 feet of gain in the first 51 miles. Highland Valley Rd is a great climb (steep and fairly low traffic).

The ride to Julian is a really good one. There are also a couple of stops (Santa Ysabel or Ramona) where you can fill up your bottles.

I prefer the ride from a little further south so you can also climb the Poway grade - a very popular hill in these parts. Here is a MB activity if you wanted to see this route:

Other two suggestions for rides would be a ride up and down the coast (HWY 101). The climb up Palomar mountain is also a really good one, although you would probably want to drtive to the start.
