Irvine 10/24 - Were you ticketed?

Was driving on Harvard in Irvine yesterday and right at Harvard Park near the corner of Harvard and Walnut there were three cyclists pulled over getting tickets from an Irvine PD Motorcycle officer.

My assumption is that they coasted through the four-way stop sign at College Park. There is occasionally an officer there watching the stop signs.

I usually creep up on that intersection slowly and if clear will slowly proceed. I go slow enough so that if I do see an officer I can still stop in time and put a foot down.

It was odd to see three cyclists just sitting on their bikes with an officer standing on the sidewalk writing tickets. Interestingly enough there was another cyclist about 200 feet ahead of them just waiting in the bike lane. Probably not with them but interested in what was going on.

First time I've seen this in Irvine.

There's been some other threads about the Irvine PD "cracking down" on cyclists this month. When they do these kinds of things, hopefully the cops are giving equal treatment to all roadway users and not just singling out cyclists.

An Irvine Police Officer spoke recently at the Bicycle Club of Irvine (BCI) and said that they were instructed to start ticketing cyclist who break the law. It seems that some drivers have complained about cyclist. So, stop at all stop signs and traffic lights.

If you blow through stop signs, you deserve the ticket.

Learn the laws, obey the laws, and then you won't be ticketed... really simple...

Yep. That's how I feel about it. If we share the roads with motor vehicles we're expected to abide by the same laws. Maybe I just have a stronger sense of self preservation than to blow red lights and stop signs.

If you are talking about obeying the same laws, then not "blowing" stop signs and lights is not good enough. You actually have to come to a complete stop. A cop can give you a ticket for even the slowest roll through. I probably come to a complete stop at less than half of stop signs and I don't remember the last time I saw another cyclist even come close. I think cops should get something better to do, but they are pricks and there is nothing we can do about it.

Back when I was in the BCI some motorists got annoyed and pressured the local police. The next group ride day several patrol cars showed up and one followed each group as it left. The group leader had me set a controlled pace at the front. As we approached the city limits on the way to Laguna Canyon the officer pulled up next to me and thanked me/US for our good behavior.
