Spring Supported Rides?
So, in the interest of stimulating conversation in this place...
Is anyone planning on doing any of the century/supported rides this spring? I want to do the Solvang half century and the Avenue of the Oaks ride in Fallbrook...
I think the family and I are planning on the Great Western Bicycle Rally in May also...
Anyone else have anything planned?

Great thread. I've never done a supported ride -- the Solvang one sounds incredible! Though the century would probably kill me (with a rating of 5 stars for difficulty). I'm curious to hear what else people are going to be riding.

Probably KOM. Close enough so that I'm only gone for a day and a half but far enough away so that the routes aren't too familiar.

Okay, here's my plan for the first part of '09:
bikeforum Poser Ride (100 KM)
Palm Springs Century (probably on my fixed gear bike)
Butterfield/Camino Real double century
Solvang Century'
Solvang Double Century
KOM Mulholland
KOM Breathless Agony
KOM Heartbreak
Wildflower Century
Eastern Sierra Double Century
Greand Tour Double Century
Maybe Central Coast Double Century . . . if I feel brave
Anyway, that takes me through Spring to mid-Summer

You guys are killing me! I'm a Clydesdale, trying to get back in shape. I'd love to do these rides, but I seriously need to lose a whole bunch of weight before I try riding those hills.
I've done Solvang several times, the last time on a tandem with my wife. (I think that was 1987) It's probably the prettiest century ride in the state. I rode the Grand Tour twice. If you want to try your first double century, that's the one to do. In fact, back in the day the L.A. Wheelmen had a great series of training rides leading up to it every Saturday morning for a few months. I'd look into them if if you're really interested in doing some serious distance rides.
Good luck I hope to start riding centuries again sometime late in 2009.

I won't be on the The Bear this year because it's the same date as the Eastern Sierra Double. Tell you what . . . how 'bout you sign up for the Eastern Sierra instead and you can kick my arse there (for twice as long!).
Gordo Grande: I rode the Grand Tour twice. If you want to try your first double century, that's the one to do.

Yeah great thread.
I'm currently in rehab for a hamstring injury and told myself that as soon as I'm able, I'd sign up for a big, long charity ride and turn it into a little mini vacation. I'm hoping February or March.

I have no idea what rides (if any) I'll be doing next year. I'm going to try and focus on my racing, so we'll see. This past summer, the long, hilly rides interfered with my speed & acceleration in crits. However, there is always El Tour de Tucson that seems to have a hook in me. Another one I might try is a fast century in Tennessee I'd like to try. Wife has relatives near Dallas, so I might be tempted to try Hotter-n-Hell 100 as well.
Here in the area? I always look for new ones. Maybe when I've exhausted them, I'll start repeating. However I am done with KOM Maybe just renegade/visit with the SFVBC as friends do Mulholland Challenge
