SART Journal & Pics....2009

Hey, Beanz--- I just found this on Velo Allegro's website:
Is this true? New? Old? Rumor? You aware?
Orange County gov't plans to close the Santa Ana River bike trail (usually known as the Santa Ana River Trail, or SART for short) between Gypsum Cyn & Green River Golf Club from October 2009 to August 2012. This will cut off the main route for bike access between Orange and Riverside Counties for nearly 3 years.
OCBC has been promised a voice in this, by a highly-placed, influential, but not all-powerful friend in the County. To be effective in this, I need contacts who: 1) ride the SART there fairly often or otherwise know about it, and 2) will be willing to tell me about it, either by phone (I'm at 949/759-0219, or if I'm out, leave a number and I WILL call back) or by e-mail (harveydonw@juno.com).
If I've left anybody out--and it's almost certain I have--it's inadvertent, and I apologize, and ask for this to be forwarded appropriately, esp. to editors, with my request to treat this as a submission for publication ASAP.

The times I've ridden from home, I rode thru Chino Hills /Carbon Cyn then donw Kraemer to the trail. I don't deal much with the section near Greenriver. I try to avoid it 99.9 percent of the time.
Now I am aware!

May 6th...Saturday. Did a nice 32 miler from Encanto, across SM then up to the shack on GMR. It was TomBunn's first victory on the shack. Dude seemed comfy most fo the way and had some to spare a the top. I'd have to say he did pick up the pace on the way to GMR but we seemed to find a way to contain the loose tiger. He did manage to conserve then kick arse on GMR. Now on the return he asked, "now can I pick up the pace?". Heeeeeel YEAH TOM, you done already kicked the shack's ARSE!...Dude finished like he wanted to go again!
It was nice as we managed to keep the group together, nice controlled pace. I know Grrlyrida could have easily dropped me but she's quite the modest rida and hung with the group. That was cool since I had mentioned my goal on this ride was to do a short climbing ride prepping for the Bear next Weekend. The Grrl seems to follow training suggestions really well! I know she's kickin' butt next weekend! A couple of weeks ago we did the village and back. I did push the pace to the shack figuring I'd head back down for a repeat if she fell far behind. WTF! She was only a couple of minutes behind! First time I rode GMR with her, she was holding back and held a slow pace. This last time, she was flying. Good thing there weren't many others on the ride or their would have been some really damaged egoes! I know afer the Bear, I aint training with here or handing out advice anymore! She'll kick my butt that's for sure! She's ready for The Bear!
Also on the ride was our SART buddy Mad_One. I had tried to get him on GMR several times before. The one time he agreed, it rained. Nice dance Dude but this time, you didn't dance hard or long enough, GOTCHA hehehehe! He rode up with ease and a good idea for the first time up. Once a rider does GMR, they end up planning for a second one. I think the dude is ready for the village. Told you it wasn't as tough as it sounds! He did great for a first timer!
Afte the group reached the shack, we planned for a short stop before the return as the skies seemd to threaten. Couple of drops here and there but that's about it. Just as we were getting ready to leave, PinoyBentrider and a buddy rode up form the village direction. Hey, it was Chrome (BF'er) First time meeting the guy after a few conversations on the forum. Couldn't let it go without a few pics so we did just that! Seemed like a nice guy and Pinoy as always is the cool dude!
Well, Tom has conquered the GMR shack, Mad_One as well and Gina a 6th or 7th time made it too. A short argument with her tummy whether or not to puke, but she won. Is that a good thing or bad thing.? Would have made for some cool and wonderful pictures!
Mad_One and Gina heading up
She's so silly! Gina wants to make it clear that this was after a short break and in no way was she ahead of the others. She says the picture looks as if she's in the lead eventhough the others could have ealiy spanked her on the climb!
Grrlyrida...always so calm and cool on the climbs!
Short conversation:
Beanz: Tom, you're kickin' but, look happy!
Tom: OK!
TomBunn's ATTACK..... ON THE SHACK!

Sunday the 7th of May. Today was an interesting ride for Gina. She got a little taste of what it's like to do a climbing ride then hop on the bike the following day. At the start she was pretty confident that it was no biggie. I cut the mileage down to 32 rather than the usual 40-50 figuring she'd tire sooner. That and Mad_one was riding with us and had a date after the ride. It was pretty windy on the way to the coast. We were pushing 14 and passing other riders. Darn, it was supposed to be an easy ride!...She did show some signs of fatigue on the way. Mad_One seemed fine. I didn't think it would be a problem on the return with a headwind, but still the plan was to cruise back.
We ran into BoyLd at the coast and maybe a good thing we did! He headed back with us but it wasn't long before the troops were showing signs of fatigue. Gina fell of the pace a few times so we slowed a bit. She seemd to recover some so we picked back up. Just then I see BoyLd swing around my left to take the front. He held the front for a while but Gina fell back again. Wasn't long before PowerRider BoyLd was pulling away. He slowed wafter he realized that we were off. So again he takes the pull but he simply had too much power today. Thank goodness it wouldn't be long before he pulls off to pick up bread and milk on his way home, well after a little sprint finish and another display of his power!
Back at the truck Gina says that she can really feel the previous day's climbing in her legs, she's wiped! Then she says she doesn't know how I do it, riding 6000 ft then riding again the next morning. Yeah well, I left it at that. Now she thinks I'm a stud!
When the troops still had energy to smile
PowerRider BoyLd taking Point. Too much power, he pulled away from the troops. He did fall back for us though!

We have been starting at Orangewood then heading inland to Imperial/Weir or Gypsum, then back to the coast. So we usually get to the coast no earlier than 12:30.
Oh that's right, we started at 11 today. One hour later than usual. It was soaking wet here in Upland this morn. So we waited to make sure it was going to dry out before heading to Anaheim. Weather and ground report courtesy of Mad_One!
Wow, Gabe looks like a mean Dude now!

Sunday June 14th...Nice 42 mile recovery ride the day after The Bear. Ran into a Pinyobentrider/ He sent us on a wild goose chase Haha! Sorry Ron, couldn't find the log, we looked for 20 minutes but didn't find a thing. If anybody finds the log on the side of the road with litle bikes on i, take a pciture for us!
Also ran into LewisAClark. So proud with his first "getting hit by a car" incident. No bikes, riders or drivers were hurt during the stunt. LewisA gets hit by car, does a triple backwards flip in the air and lands on his feet. Better teach us all the trick just incase!
Pinoy, telling us how to find the magic log!
Now these guys pulled a fast one on me. The Fixie Brothers pull up on a road bike.
Oh OK! NOw I know who you are! Don't make me think guys! The new Cervelo threw me off till the Taxi arrived. Between these two and Pops, they got about a hundred bikes and all types. OK, maybe not 100!
Hey Ma, look at me! Happy to be upfront
OK MA, not so happy! This is what a Continental looks like seconds before getting dropped.

Saturday June 20.....Well started out to be a nice ride. Backed off the pace today heading for a higher milege ride. As we got near the coast, it started drizzling. Had been for a while according to reports from other riders. We hit the wooden bridge then headed back inland. I had enough on the Bear lastweekend. Not thrilled about riding in the wet weather again. Didn't feel safe as we had planned to ride PCH. SO we head inland bu the ride was at 52'ish miles so I suggested that we head towards the coast for another 4 miles, then back with the tailwind. Easy 60 milers so I thought.
Well about a mile before we turn to head back to the truck, Gina hits my backwheel, goes down and does a facelplant into a bush. She doesn't remember how, just that she gained speed and hit it. Maybe it had to do with the stiff headwind? Maybe hit a pocket and a slingshot forward into the wheel? Well she was shaken but ok. Took the barend into her thigh and brusied the other thigh too. A mild rash on her elbow and a small twig stuck in her temple. Fortunately she shot to the side and hit the bushes and dirt rather than the pavement. She's a lil banged up but started to cry on the roadside saying she felt so silly. A bruised ego I guess!...and it figures, when you wanna cry, that's when the troops roll by. But nicely offered help by several riders and a couple of friends, Alan and LewisAClark.
Closer shot of the Lil bikes
and the Lil signs
Rumour on the trail has it these are the 3 toughest guys on The RiverVelo squad
Somebody remind Gina that she's not supposed to aim for my back wheel!

Look like her injuries are pretty minor, that is good news.. Overlapping wheels is probably the biggest reason for many crashes..

Gina - Sorry to hear about your fall. I know just how you feel too. Glad to see your injuries seem minor. I sure hope they are. Take care of yourself so you can get back on that bike and ride again. I've been there and you just have to keep on going . Feel better .

June 21st. Rode w/o Gina today, she on the recoup. 54.5 miles on the trail today Started at the Leaky fountain then headed to the coast. Sat n talked to Lucas for a while then headed back. Saw Insidious Meme so headed back fora bit to talk. After a bit the River Velo Boyz (and Gurl) rolled by so I hopped on the back. Rode with them to the Honda Center while taking a few pics. Then headed back to the coast once more as I had seen MTBLurker at the Leaky fountain. Didn't catch him on the way back to the coast. We did ride back together. I was getting tired so MTBLurker said,"here, let me pull for a bit". Geeze, the dude pulled at 24 mph trying to rip my legs off! After a few miles he says he's tired so he slows to 22! Dude tried to kill me! At the end we ran into Condorita. Tried to chase her down but her sprint was too much!
Insidious Meme
RiverVelo.....BF at the front did a monster pull. 10 miles (?)...Swear I can't 'member his forum name!
