So, I live in Loma Linda, and for my longer weekend rides, usually ride the Santa Ana River Trail, getting on at Waterman in San Bernardino, and riding the 21 or so miles until I hit dirt at the end. I know that in years past, there's been discussion (and even city meetings and that kind of stuff) about connecting this part of the trail with the other end of the SART that goes to Huntington Beach or wherever it ends up, resulting in a lovely 100+ mile bike path.

Anyhow, does anyone know anything about the completion of the section of the Norco to Yorba Linda section of the trail? On the SART planning website (https://www.sawpa.org/projects/planning/sart.htm) they have minutes of meetings up until 10/17/07, but then nothing.

I'm guessing the economy/government budget in California has a lot to do with the freezing of this project, but wondered if anyone had any more information about its progress (or lack thereof).

Not that i know of yet... Last time i was there it ended out by Hidden Valley equestrian park. Then again that was right at the end of summer, but i somehow doubt they've extended it any further... I'll probably be out there on friday to go ride it though.

This has been in the works for the last 20 years, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the current budget concerns.. It is just not a top agenda item to get finished..

Oh, I guess I was unaware that it's been going on for 20 years. It just seemed like there had been some substantial progress made in the last two years or so (when I first rode the trail west from Waterman, it stopped about four miles out...now it goes 20), so I just wondered at the lack of progress after significant progress.

Thanks for giving me some context. Guess I'll just wait another 20 years.

From what I understand, routing the trail around the Prado Dam area was still an unresolved item.

Prado Dam is the biggie. Giant project on that right now that still has yet to wrap up. The other hitch is Green River Golf Club. The Santa Ana River runs right through the course, which has been privately owned for many years (though Orange County has expressed an intent to buy it, which would solve some problems with the trail project). So you've got the legal hitch of cyclists riding through private property.

Years ago, mountain bikers could connect with the Aliso Canyon Road in Chino Hills State Park through Green River. Now you can't do that. If you drive to Green River and take a look to see whether you can still cut into Chino Hills State Park from that entrance, you will a) notice cameras trained on you, b) see a security-cop golf cart quickly heading your way. GRGC does not want to see any trespassers on the course.

You've got GRGC, the Army Corps of Engineers (Prado Dam) and possibly the railroad and METROLINK to deal with in terms of ironing out the right of way. Very complex.
