Bicyclist Killed Early Sunday in Malibu by Suspected Drunk Driver
JUNE 28, 2009 - A man died and his son was injured when they were struck by a car while riding bicycles, authorities said. The father, estimated to be in his 40s, died at the scene and his teenage son was transported to a local hospital, where he was expected to survive, according to Malibu sheriff’s officials. The driver of the car, identified as 30-year-old Robert Sanchez of Oxnard, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after ditching his truck about a mile south of the crash and fleeing on foot, authorities said. The father and son were participating in a 200-mile ride that begins and ends in Malibu. They were stuck about 1:30 a.m. on Pacific Coast Highway. The Malibu Sheriff’s Department is investigating the collision.
