discovered new climb off shady canyon!!

i've been riding the turtle rock/shady canyon/quail hill area for the longest time and pretty much know every incline in those neighborhoods. however, on a ride today, i finally decided to venture into the new residential areas off to the right of shady canyon and discovered a great little residential climb up copper creek/ golden eagle. its about 1.4 miles and gains close to 500 feet or about 6.7%... a flat section in the middle and the last half mile averages about 11.5%. not a bad little climb, with fresh tarmac and more or less no residential traffic! i've got a course now in that area that includes, starcrest, shady canyon, quail hill, and summit park that nets about 3000ft! not bad for a 3 mile radius! i can get close to 5000 ft if i add a couple out and backs up newport coast/ridge park/ vista ridge!

Off to the right of Shady? Going which direction? I can't visualize where you are talking about.

EDIT - Never mind, I found it. Past the guard gate when you come in from the Turtle Rock side.

Fredo, you're my older brother and I love you...but don't ever take sides, with anyone, against the family again...ever.

here's the link to the route... hope it works...

    http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united...24752770130947

basically you start at the irvine open space reserve center and you climb to the highest spots in the turtle rock, shady canyon, quail hill, turtle ridge and newport coast neighborhoods. a lot of out and back climbing so you get to feel the major hills from both directions. the elevation on mapmyride really underestimates the gain. on bike route toaster or bikely sites, the elevation gain is over 5k and just adding up each climb from high and low spots on google earth gets you in that neighborhood without including slight rises, false flats or "incidental elevation gains" as i like to refer to them. would be curious if someone with a garmin actually did this ride and reported the results. in any event, its more or less the all star climbs of the area and a **** load of climbing any way you look at it. and it beats having to drive to the santa monica or san gabriels!

I thought we were supposed to stay on the trail when going through the gated community?

Thanks for the Mapmyride link. I am looking for some new riding and I am definitely going to integrate some of these streets. I don't know if I want to do the whole 40 miles, just yet!!

hmmm... i hadn't really thought about this but i guess you are probably right. however, there really isn't any person or patrol that is going to tell you otherwise. and barely a 1/3 of the area is developed, so there are probably not a lot of residents around to complain. anyways, i've always felt that if you looked and act like you belong (in this case, own a $6M home) and you are not causing trouble or breaking rules, then no one is going to question why you are anywhere. i suppose if a club ride goes tearing through there, there might be some problems, but the odd one or two cyclists trying to get some additional climbing in isn't going to stir things up too much.

I rode through the gate on the UC Irvine side a few years ago, and got yelled at by the security guard. If you can sneak though without them seeing you, or "escape" onto the road from later down the path, you shouldn't have a problem.

I agree, but even if I could afford the $6m home in there, I still wouldn't look like I belonged.

well i guess the "nouveau riche" these days has all sorts of different looks, so maybe its more about the acting part... just complain a lot about association fees and maybe threaten to write the gate guard up... everyone will surely think that you live there.

You're allowed to ride anywhere in Shady Canyon provided you have a carbon or Ti bike equipped with DA, SuperRecord, or Red. The guards will stop anyone seen riding 105, and you'll be arrested if caught riding any Sun Tour gear.

I've been harassed while running out there off the trail. Sometimes solo, sometimes in a group. Security will chase you down in their cars. YMMV

This is a good route. The Rebels use the path through Shady on the way to Laguna Canyon. We've been known to jump the path(s) and wait for a car to trip the gate and head on in for some extra credit climbing. Never been hassled.

    (Knock on wood.)

apparently they only use swing arm gates into the neighborhood now, so you don't have to wait for any car to trip the gate open... just roll on around for the extra credit climbing!
