Anyone else looking for folks to cruise around with (no, not as in dating). :)

As you may have read in other posts, I'm super new. Hills and grades make me grumpy, even though I try them. I don't know how far I actually can go yet. BUT...it's summer, I'm a teacher and have lots of time and I'm wondering if any of you get together for easy, relaxing, non stressful rides in the Los Angeles area? I have my husband to ride with but we don't always want to go at the same time. Would be nice to make a couple friends who are up for meeting somewhere for easy rides.

Just putting it out there. Who knows what will come of this.

You might try an early morning ride along PCH through Malibu. It's not overly hilly, with just a few inclines to deal with. Traffic is also very light along that route at that time of day. Just ride west as far as you want, then be back to your starting point by noon and you should have a great ride. I'd start just west of Topanga Canyon Blvd where the road widens out compared with the narrower Santa Monica/Pacific Palasades sections. There's also lots of cycling company along that route on weekend mornings, as I discovered today.

We were out on PCH a few days ago. Drove from SanMo to Ventura County line. There is NO way I'm riding my little hybrid all that way. PCH was scary. We saw some cyclists and I even told my husband, "I'd never ride that!". I ride around my home in Hollywood. I'll be commuting to work next year. As far as more fun rides, I'm thinking bike paths, LA river, or up and down the many lovely streets of Los Feliz.

For starting out, I would probably steer someone away from PCH until they felt comfortable with high speed traffic.

Thanks! PCH isn't just high speed, it's got hardly a shoulder in many parts, and lots of grades as you get north. Heck, I ride Sunset and Hollywood Blvd when I got out now, so traffic I'm getting used to, but definitely not fully comfortable with.

I'm a teacher, too, but at a year-'round school (I'm off in Sep/Oct). I commute about 3-4x/week pretty much right through/around Griffith Park. During commuting, though, I have a destination to get to and might not be the most social person to be around. You might try looking up UrbanKnight here at BikeForums (also a teacher) who is off this summer. If he's got a recovery day planned, that might be a good one for him. He's out of Pasadena, BTW--not too terribly far from Los Feliz.

PCH isn't usually bad, it's just that when it is, it can be morbidly bad. But you've got to get to a certain level of riding comfort first: riding in traffic. The fastest/easiest/safest way to do this through "group rides". If you wouldn't mind driving a little, I know the San Fernando Valley Bike Club is excellent for riders like you described, and very likeable & social.

I wonder if you teach where I taught the last 3 years? Trying to think of a question to determine that without outing you per se.

Hey Tamara-- I ride from Santa Monica south towards Palos Verdes on occasion in the mornings. PM me if you ever want to give that ride a try. It's a pretty mild way to get a beach ride in without the aggravation of PCH. Though the bike path has it's own aggravations, I think it's def safer than PCH

My wife was a PE Teacher at Virgil MS until this month...now she's moving to CLAMS. You probably know her. I see that you're from Santa Clarita, so I'm pretty sure that I know you too! :-)

Tamara,

Look into the L.A. Wheelmen. They ride all over the county, and have short, medium and long rides every weekend. I rode with them every weekend for several years before dropping out, but I still hold them in high regard. They also have one group that just rides Griffith Park twice a week.

I hope this helps.

OOOH< where are they meeting at? I live in Hollywood. The only issue is the bike is actually at the shop. Supposed to get it back tomorrow though so quite a possibility.

Let me know the details. I was waiting for you to comment

If you get a chance to talk with LaBonge, make sure every other word is Griffith Park.

Wednesday night, July 22nd at 6 p.m., marks the final ride in Councilmember LaBonge's 2009 Tour LaBonge summer bike ride series. If you haven't participated yet, consider taking this evening ride through Hollywood, Hancock Park and the Miracle Mile with a great group of cycling enthusiasts. Tour LaBonge is a fun, fun event that includes one pit-stop for ice cream at the half-way point.
Riders will gather at Hollywood City Hall, 6501 Fountain Ave. at 6 p.m. Kickstands up at 6:15. All riders must wear helmets, be at least 10 years of age and sign liability waivers.
The rides are free and open to the public. They proceed at a leisurely pace and cover an 8- to 12- mile course. Los Angeles Police Department bicycle and patrol officers escort riders to ensure traffic safety. The routes follow a circular route and last about two hours.
Councilmember LaBonge launched his series of summer evening bike rides to promote cycling as a cheap, environmentally friendly and healthy form of transportation in a region with the worst traffic in the country.
The city is developing a new bicycle master plan now and encourages input from riders. To learn more, please click here.

So Alice, are you for sure going? I'm not sure yet, depends on when I get my bike back. If I'm there, the bike is black, TREK, step through. My helmet will be blue. I've got uber curly hair. Hope to see you

Call your bike shop and nag them...

Better yet, go over there and stand around.

I haven't ridden with the L.A. Wheelmen for a long, long time, but I'm guessing that a hybrid would probably be just fine for the short rides.

Bike is done. Have errands to run before going to get it. They said five, but it was done before 11. They're pretty nice guys.

Status of me doing the La Bonge ride, getting more likely. But pathetically I'm worried about being able to keep up! I'm a doofus.
