LA River Path Closed bet. Glendale & Fletcher

They finally started working on the LA River path extension from Fletcher to Barclay St. They closed the path from Glendale to Fletcher until Feb. 2010. You can still go on that part of the path, you have to slide yourself and bike under the river's guardrails. I went on to the path at Fletcher yesterday, it's open but has trucks parked on the side. They've started the extension where the path ends closest to the river.

I saw where they were digging into the concrete under Fletcher. I'm not too excited about this extention but I think it will be good for a lot of people.

My bad. It should be Barclay street right before where Riverside Dr. winds around to meet San Fernando. It's across the 5 Freeway from Elysian Park.

Interesting. I stopped riding to work just (from Northridge) because I got hit twice on Riverside after exiting the bike path at Fletcher before Stadium Way. Never a problem through the much more crowded Chinatown/downtown area.

I've been riding the part of the river trail south of Fletcher all the way down to where it dumps you out on Riverside. It's not too bad, the only problem is the path can be pretty rough in spots. I wonder if they're going to repave it.

The end of path at Fletcher used to be my regular pit stop. Glad to hear they're working on that portion.

Actually it's not really a path. It's an easement put there by the army corp of engineers when the la river channel was built. I thought it was a path too. It's too rough for my skinny tires and bike. I felt like I was in Belgium riding over cobblestones.

LA River path is opened between Glendale and Fletcher.

From the LACBC:

The LA River Path is now open from Glendale to Fletcher. according to LADOT they will have to close it again when it's time to do finishing touches, such as re-striping at Fletcher, but for now, the path is open. They are leaving the detour signs posted so that they'll be in place when they have to close the path again. Currently we do not have any specific dates for when the closure will occur again. Construction on the new section downstream from Fletcher is still underway and the path is closed.

Public Works has also told us that they will be installing lights along the path and that they don't expect problems with the lights from Fletcher downstream.

Enjoy the path!

So what is the full plan? How far downstream are they going to go?

Well I hope they light the whole path again. And figure how to keep the wiring from being stolen again!

Extension completed

I finally got a chance to ride the new extension to the LART. It's flat and smooth. They extended it 2.5 miles making the trail 7.24 miles altogether. There were a lot of people using it already. I guess if you build it, they will come. They also cleaned up the plastic bags and other debris from the river so it's the nicest I've seen it all year. I guess they did it for the upcoming river ride.

They haven't installed fencing yet. But finally we have a flat area to ride and now I can do one of my favorite climbs up Mt. Hollywood and then go to my other favorite climb Mt. Washington without going through that no shoulder, Indy track called Riverside Dr.

I've been on the extention a few times. Because of it's proximity to a residential area, it is a bit more of a MUP than the rest of the bike path. A lot of dog walkers and baby carriages. But if you ride it at the right time, it is a nice extention. Nice to get away from the freeway for a while. A couple of laps will give you 28 traffic free miles now. Is this as far as they plan to take the extention?

The City had a plan called the green necklace where the LA River in Los Feliz was suppose to connect to other trails that lead to Long Beach. There were also suppose to be parks adjoining the trail like River Park. But with the budget crisis and incompetent leadership in Los Angeles, I doubt we'll see that dream come to fruition any time soon.

Why are you dirtying up the new part of the path with your unkempt bike? I like my graffiti unadulterated.

So, until they actually connect the two paths, what is the best way on surface streets to get from the end of the long beach section to the northern section?

The LART will be extended south to Figueuroa. The extension will open during the LA River Ride in a couple of weeks.

Hmmm. I just came from there and nothing's being done between Figueroa and River Park. Isn't the ride next week? They are however cleaning up the dead trees, leaves, debris and encampments from the middle of the river. You won't recognize it. The islands are so clean. They are also putting up the fencing.

LAPD did a sweep last Friday, but I see all the homeless with new encampments are back on the path.

One thing ridiculous about the LAPD sweeps is that they leave all the homeless trash at the Glendale entrance for a week. The ride is also going to be really special with all the graffiti thats been going up as well. The grafitti goes up as fast as they paint over it. I also have not seen anything done at the end of the path except the rats that live under Riverside. We actually started naming them. Perhaps they could be the new mascots of the River ride.

I didn't see the rats but I got a huge whiff of human excrement.

Yea, they will need a HAZMAT team to do a pre clear before that path gets extended.
