Pismo Beach Routes?

I'm heading to Pismo Beach in a couple of weeks for a friends wedding and I'm looking for some routes in the area - about 40 miles, rolling preferable as gf will be riding along as well. I thought about the stretch from Pismo down the 1 to Guadalupe perhaps, looks pretty damn flat tho... any suggestions?

It's pretty flat for most of it but after you pass through Oceano there are some good rollers and a nice park-ish area that you go through. Overall not a bad ride. Not sure about inland routes from there.

I seem to remember the roads up the hill from Point San Luis and Avila Beach being pretty interesting. I've only been there on a motorcycle though. Diablo Canyon looked really inviting on the map, but the friendly guard at the gate had an M16 around his chest. (Post 9/11 hysteria, FTW.)

If you want to add more climbing and the schedule works for you, you can ride 50 miles to Lompoc and then take the Amtrak back to Pismo.

When I toured that area, I got tired of the fog as beautiful as the coast is.. I headed inland. And rejoined the coast near Lompoc/ Solvang. I followed the route recommended by Adventure Cycling . Near Pismo Dunes State Park we went inland on Oso Flaco Lake Road towards Santa Maria.. Near rolling road admist a scenic valley.. From Santa Maria south on Foxen Canyon Road in the Santa Barbara wine district to Solvang area. nice diversion. In the southern part of Foxen Canyon , you have some nice climbs.

There is a really cool bike trail (if you can find it) that takes you out to Avila Beach. I love riding the area just to do that bike trail. It has a name - I'm sure someone can ID it.

Also you can ride up from Pismo to SLO and there is all sorts of riding inland around the wineries. Check out the SLOBC (San Luis Obispo Bike Club) website. I'm sure some of their route slips are posted.

Check this out:

The Avila/Shell beach bike trail is the Bob Jones trail.

This is a nice ride in the area. It is called See Canyon to Perfumo Canyon. You could start south of course and not from SLO. Great view!! But there is a short gravel section with cows!!

edit: just re-read the original post. You are looking for a rolling ride and one for the GF. Well this one isn't it. But the country road might be worth it.

I'm sorry, by the time I got home from work it was mid-night and I forget to send you some rides. I'll get them for you.

Here’s a 30 mile route that will take you into SLO and back.

From the center of Pismo, Price St. and Hinds/Price Canyon Rd..
Price Canyon Rd. east to Edna Rd. 4.7 miles
Rt. on Edna to Corbett Canyon Rd. .4 miles
Lt. on Corbett Canyon Rd. to Tiffany Ranch Rd. 2.0 miles
Lt. on Tiffany Ranch Rd. to Orcutt Rd. 1.0 mile
Lt. on Orcutt Rd. to Johnson Ave. 6.7 miles. At 5.7 miles Orcutt makes a Rt., small park on left. If you continue straight the road becomes Tank Farm Rd.
Rt. on Johnson Ave to Higuera St. 2.1 miles
Lt. on Higuera St., this will take you through downtown SLO.
Stay on Higuera St. to Ontario Rd. 5.0 miles.
Rt. on Ontario Rd., if you go straight you will enter Hwy 101, to Avila Beach Dr. 3.1 miles
Lt. on Avila Beach Dr. to Palisades Rd./Shell Beach Rd. .2 miles
Rt. on Palisades/Shell Beach Rd. which will turn into Price St. to the finish at the place you started 4.6 miles.

Another ride to a great little place in Baywood Park next to the bay, great food.

North on Price St-Shell Beach Rd to Avila Beach Rd. 4.6 miles
Lt. on Avila Beach Rd to Ontario Rd. 0.2 miles
Rt. on Ontario Rd. to Higuera St. 3.1 miles
Lt. on Higuera St. to Los Osos Valley Rd. 1.7 miles
Lt on Los Osos Valley Rd. to 9th St. in Los Osos 10.6 miles
Rt. on 9th to Santa Ynez Ave. 0. 2 miles
Lt. on Santa Ynez to 8th St. 0.1 mile
Rt. on 8th to El Morro Ave 0.8 miles
Lt. on El Morro Ave to Coffee ‘n Things Café, 1399 2nd St next to the bay on left 0.4 miles
Back track to return to Pismo, round trip 42 miles pretty much flat. Go in the morning to miss headwinds on Los Osos Valley Rd., but they will be welcomed on the way home.
