Orange County Training

Interval training sessions on a closed loop. This is great training for all levels of ability. Its a closed loop so if you go off the back just hop on the next lap.

Where: Skypark Cr Click to view, Loop course, branch arrow points to parking. (see in Satellite View)

Directions: 405 freeway N or S Toward John Wayne Airport, off at MacArthur Blvd. Parking is behind Starbucks at MacArthur and Main Food Park.

Roll Time: Thursday's 5:30

Starting: Thursday September 24th

General Info: Bring lights eventually we will need them. Helmets are mandatory. I have trained here before in moderate to large groups and its as safe as any public road.

General Format: CW circulation on Skypark Cr.

1. Warm up 5 laps give or take double pace line
2. 6 laps 1 lap on/1 lap off progressive build 3x
3. 6 laps 1/2 lap on/1/2 lap off sprints 2 laps on/1 lap off 2x
4. 6 laps 1/4 lap on/1/4 lap off sprints 2 laps on/1 lap off 2x
5. finish either pace line at chase pace or lead outs 4-5 laps
6. couple laps warm down
7. Approx. 30 miles

If your late just hop on. If you go off the back just hop on when the group comes around again.

If you have any questions or there is anything not clear about the format give me a PM or email.

Is this training ride still going on? I just moved to OC and live literally less than a mile away from Skypark.

Not really, since Great Park now has races every Thursday...alot of us have transitioned to it. I think we will come back there when the race season is over.

Although there are some cyclist still train there at Tuesdays at 530pm.

It seems a lot of the riders in OC who had been doing the impromptu speed circuits in/around Irvine, Mission Viejo, or other rare areas with limited traffic after 5:30pm and limited/no stop signs have transitioned their workouts to the Great Park Crits on Thursdays...I haven't seen hardly any of the regulars at the usual places on Tuesdays are there anymore...I sometimes see a few putting in some base miles, but no intervals or pacelines that I can try to hang onto.

Time to go back to the Rock n Road Shop Ride out of MV...if they change that to Tuesdays from the current website announcing it on Thursdays.

I rode through Santiago Canyon last Thursday before the Great Park crit, and I saw the Thursday night Rock n Road shop ride coming the opposite way. There were at least 30 people there...so clearly the Great Park crit hasn't affected that ride too much. You should join them if you really don't want to do the crit, but I can't think of better training than racing.

Also, I'm wondering...why would think a Thursday night crit take away from Tuesday night rides?

I dunno...maybe there's only space once a week for intervals/speed training. Tuesdays used to be a great day in the week for it, but twice a week might be too much so Tuesdays become base days.

All I know is every other casual rider I've run into has noticed the same thing...all the speedy riders that are team oriented (or were not interested in bumping elbows at Eldo) have apparently disappeared from public roads on Tuesdays.

There has been a crit training for the past two Tuesdays I visited at Skypark. This is mostly driven by Edge cycling team. I know for sure that interval workouts that was on Thursday will return when season is over.
