Zombie-pie!
I've been looking forward to this sucker all month, so I'm resurrecting Frankenstein's terminated Pie Ride.
Here's the Route Map.
Place: Mayflower Dog Park in Escondido (See Point A in the above map)
Time: 8:00am on 10/18 (Sunday)
Distance: +/- 90 miles
Climbage: +/- 11,000 feet, including Lake Wohlford Grade, Palomar Mountain's South Grade, Mesa Grande. (The real climbing will be done after Mesa Grande and it will be rollers with a downhill trend from Santa Ysabel on.)
Sunday's forecast for Santa Ysabel is 76 degrees and it should be really beautiful after the rain we'll be getting this week.

Some photos of the route to tempt you. The forecasted high has been changed to only 74.

So it's on for Sunday then ya? If you guys want we can start from my house and get a couple miles to warm up before heading up to Lake Wohlford. Do we have a head count yet?

Looks like it's just you and me, Roberto. I'd love your company if you can make it too, but no hard feelings if you'd rather join in other reindeer games.
Before the Tour de Poway, this route seemed a little far-fetched (or at very least a slog.) But I've been visualizing this ride ever since, so I'm doing it come #3ll or high water. All grub & grog are on me if you can make it.

Pie it is. Two, possibly three. Weather should be nice, warm but not excessive. If I ride with the club tomorrow I'll pass the word on, maybe get a few more to join us.

91.4 miles, and probably only about 8500 feet of climbing (Garmin battery pooped out.) I had a flat tire before Palomar and was having a tough time in the motorcycle fumes on the South Grade, (they were thicker than flies on poo yesterday morning) but Robertkat & Jabikant were kind enough to wait (and wait) for me at the top.
The rest of the ride was a dream! (Oh yeah, except for the 4-5 miles on the 78 west of Santa Ysabel--all the dirt-bike trailers were coming back from the desert for the weekend.)
But Mesa Grande, Old Julian Hwy, and Highland Valley Road were smooth, empty and shady much of the way.
Many thanks to Rob & Alan for making the journey and making it fun!
Will definitely do this ride again this winter. (It was a little warm on the mountain and windy toward the end.)

I had a great time, despite coasting on fumes into Escondido. The motorcycles on Palomar did seem to be a bit on the rude side this time, and yes the air was thick. The pie was excellent, thank you Chris.

This used to be an annual deal for us. Don't know what happened with that. It just seems like everyone has settled into different routines now, including myself. I think for the most part, a lot of people stopped doing it because there was too much stopping for too long along the way.

Three riders turned out to be the perfect peloton for this one. (Except for the w@nker who got the flat tire, took forever to get up the South Grade, insisted everyone stop for pictures at the Henshaw overlook, and was getting gas from the navy bean soup he had in Santa Ysabel.)
It was a seriously great, great route! So many of the sections had brand-new, baby-smooth asphalt: Mesa Grande, Old Julian Road, Highland Valley, even the 79 north of Santa Y & the 78 West of it. It's easy to see why this state's having financial trouble when we've clearly been spending so much on the roads. God I love living here!

Well, it used to happen in early fall and late winter/early spring. That's why I wonder why there weren't more takers on this one.
As for the stopping, I'm sure you know how it is. With a larger group, the stops typically last from the time the first guys get there until the last guy gets his fill or is just plain ready to go.
Last time we did it there was a pretty big gap formed between the stop-and-eat(for an hour) crowd and the we-can-eat-at-the-end folks. I think this was probably the ride that made everyone realize that it's just as hard for some people to go slow as it is for some to go fast.

I see that happen a lot. It's pretty normal for rides with club to split in two groups, but on a 40 mile loop it's not as big a deal. I was thinking we could do this again, say early Spring, and stay on the 76, bypassing Palomar for a lighter edition. Plus, if it was a bigger group, I wouldn't mind a more "touring" type of pace.
off on a tangent: are those big touring motorcycles (like goldwings) nerdy or unhip? cause i like those

q:What's the difference between a Harley and a vacuum cleaner? a: On a vacuum, the dirtbag is mounted on the back, not the top.
Yesterday was the worst I've seen Palomar in a long time. It's not often that bad. Usually one or two of them crash, which brings ambulances, which brings CHP cruisers, which clears off the mountain.
