Not much detail but sad nonetheless.

Holy cow, I rode right by that on my commute this morning about 30 minutes after it happened. The scene looked terrible, the bike was completely destroyed. I had no idea it was this bad.

From what the story reports, sounds like they already assume it's the cyclist fault. Note that they report that the cyclist collided with the police car. Also of note is that the officer was responding to a non urgent call and did not have lights and /or sirens activated, which strangely seems to occur most of the time in any accident involving a police car colliding/hitting someone/thing. Most likely speed was the deciding factor. A sad incident.

I would really love a more detailed account of what happened. As Robertkat said, it's sad the way they've already phrased it "rode directly into the path of the cruiser." I know accidents happen, but I don't see too many cyclists riding directly in front of a moving vehicle - they know they'll lose. Again, accidents happen, even cyclists miss things, but a more detailed report of what happened without phrases that place blame, would be nice.

    Sad none the less =(

Not to open a can of worms or anything.... but, IMO, it would be to see some sort of 3rd party/taskforce investigate any serious accident scene that involves the police -- perhaps this already exists? Sorry to sound jaded, but the police investigating an accident scene in which they are involved will always cast a shadow of doubt/mistrust. Awful accident either way.

My guess is that the cop probably wasn't paying as much attention as he should have been because that intersection is at the top of a steep hill so if you are coming in fast, it can be a blind run through the intersection or at least very difficult to see a cyclist. I figure he was trying to make a left, but the question is, did any cars go with him and avoid the police or was the cyclist the only one to go?
