Cook's Corner and Courtesy
As a 'last ride before the storms' yesterday, I decided to ride from San Clemente out to Cook's Corner. What a beautiful day for a ride! The route I chose put about 90% of the hills in the first half of the ride so I arrive home feeling... great!
We are all used to riding defensively, watching for distracted/rushed/inattentive/cranky motorists and we all have lots of stories about the close calls we've had. But yesterday was different.
I actually had about 4 or 5 instances within the 50+ miles of motorists overtly obeying the law, yielding when appropriate and even waving! It was the kind of ride that only happens once in a while, but I'll take it!

Come on now, you are kidding, right? I thought this was a bike forum, not a comedy forum.

I think the coverage of the road rage trial has made people more aware, and dare I say it, more accommodating of cyclists. My rides recently have been complemented by motorist smiles and waves (mostly).

I was out there a few weeks ago on my motorcycle, and because the traffic was light, and most people were out for an enjoyable Sunday drive, I got the impression that there was a bit of courtesy to be found on the road.
There may be hope for the world yet.

I ride Santiago Cyn in a huge group every weedend. We usually have no problems. Lately though it seems when bikes are hanging outside of the bike lane cars have been blowing there horns and passing really close. Seems like there trying to make a statment. I think the press cycling has gotten recently has had a possitive and negitive effect on motorist.

i live in that area and ride by there 5 times a week. barely a time or two did i get "buzzed" or anything.
my only complaint is the large groups of cyclists that gather at the top of the 1st hill. they park all the way out to the road and gives drivers only about 20ft of visibility coming over the peak to see me passing them in the road.

They might dress up in their fearsomest black leather, but they're just a bunch of orthodontists and paralegals. (Actual violent felons can't afford Harleys anymore.)

I'll be riding by there at about 9:00 PM on the upcoming Camino Real Double Century. The course goes up Antonio to Santa Margarita to Trabuco Canyon to Live Oak, right turn at Cook's Corner.
Are there a lot of motorcycles there at night, or do all the orthodontists and paralegals need to be in bed (or, at least, off their motorcycles) by that time?
Rick / OCRR
