Rides near CSU San Bernardino

Anyone ever gone up Rim of the World (hwy 18) or have any specific knowledge of good/bad local roads?

I've heard good things about the GMR, and I intend to ride it after classes some days, but I'm looking for other options to fill a smaller two hour gap and I don't have the time to drive (nor ride) the additional forty miles each way from campus.

Flat surface roads are fine, suggestions don't have to be climbs.

I used to live near Palm and Kendall Dr. (215 fwy). I'd ride across Cajon Blvd (?) just the opposite side of the 215 from the 7/11 on the Denny's side before you hit the RR tracks.

Across to Devore Rd, up the hill, across towards Kenwood, down Kenwood then up along the side of Cajon Pass. I'm not sure of the names anymore but it might be Old Cajon Blvd. It ends near Cleghorn, way up on the 15 fwy.

Thanks Beanz! Exhumed, when is your gap? I've got a workshop Tuesday and Thursday until 1:50, but I'm done after that, and nothing prior to 12:00 on Tuesdays. I was thinking of brutally assaulting my soft, pathetic legs on GMR or RotW FWY on Tuesday mornings.

For Tuesday and Thursday I have a gap between 12-4pm. I want to try RotW even though I haven't been doing much climbing lately, but I just think the name of that highway sounds awesome and have always wanted to try it. I am planning to to ride up to Big Bear to watch Stage 6 of ToC so have to prepare for that 27 mile climb.

Try looking in mapmyride for the city of Redlands, you will find about 375 rides in the local area.

If you are looking for a climbing ride, Oak Glen is very to CSUSB; there is also Angelus Oaks nearby.

Hwy 18 is not everyone's cup of tea, it is a highly trafficked mountainous road. But if traffic does not bother you, I say go for it. I have done it a few times.

There is also a local bike club, rwbtc.org, that rides Tuesday and Thursday mornings (as well as the weekends) you can check there web site for more information.

Thanks a bunch. I'm mostly looking for rides right around campus, since this is mostly a "steal away between classes" sort of thing, but I'll look into Redlands too.

Rode up HWY 18 yesterday with a few friends and it wasn't too bad. We started at 40th street and took Old Waterman which reconnects to HWY 18 after 2-3 miles of 6-10% grades. HWY 18 itself wasn't a hard climb, or maybe I just didn't push myself hard enough because I was a bit hungover. Took us about 2 hours or less to climb it and it seemed like 10 minutes to descend. On the descend a friend and I just took a whole lane and made sure cars were aware of us at all times. Might do this in between my 4 hour gaps since school is only 3 miles away from the start of the climb.

A friend of ours did it fixed on 48/17 and I'm not afraid to admit that he was the first to the top because he is a machine! That guy can climb.

Yeah, I'm most concerned with the descent down HWY 18. It was pretty busy when I did a reconnaissance drive last week. Either way, doing it tomorrow via Old Waterman. Have you looked into riding up Devil's Canyon Road right by campus at all? I want to try it, but I'm vaguely concerned about it being the emergency flood plain, given how much weather there has been lately, and I'm not 100% on the legality, but it's a nice 2k foot climb pretty much right on campus.

Yeah I want to try that to see how far it goes.

What time will you ride Old Waterman tomorrow?

Went up Devil's Canyon, there's a gate just a few miles up, as well as some really crazy rotting industrial space. Not really worth it unless you're down with meager hill repeats. Went up Old Waterman around one PM. Was that you I passed on their way down? I shouted 'I'M TOO FAT FOR THIS SPORT' as my heart tried to kick out my ribcage. The 26/48 was a bit much for me. Might have to swap that out. I saw a semi-high speed chase go down though, that was cool.

I wasn't able to ride today because I didn't have my bike with me. I'll be riding Thursday around 12:30. Going through Old Waterman and depending on time I'll see if I make it up to Crestline. I did most of it on 39/25.
