Rio Hondo closed 5/3-5/6

I saw a sign today that the Rio Hondo Path will be closed from 5-3 to 5-6 starting at Peck Conservation Park down through the Bosque to Rosemead / San Gabriel Blvd.

Good-maybe the cracks will be gone soon!

Might be the case as the entire section on the SGRT trail through the dam up until a mile before the Rio Hondo split is perfectly paved! I was very please to notice this on my last ride!

I live by the cross over bridge in Downey and usually go up the Rio Hondo 5 miles to the new water fountain and back as a cool down lap. In January they had signs up that the Rio would be closed from Firestone to Florence, however the rains came so it was open all this time. I was on the SGRB yesterday and work crews were patching some cracks south of Eldo. They were doing a very bad job and more or less making speed bumps, it may take some time before it becomes level. I am going to Huntington Beach today so will ride down this trail again and see were they stopped.

I rode down to LB from Downey on Saturday and the trail was repaved from just south of Southern (I think) down just before Alondra (I think). Anyway, they had paving equipment parked all over the place so I won't be surprised if they take it all the way down to LB. But any thing can happen.

Ya, i thought i would zip down Rio Hondo/L.A. riverbed to pick up some small parts just off of Anaheim Blvd and LA riverbed. Did not think they would be going all the way down to the Port but they are. Had to cross over to the other side of the riverbed, what a mistake. Thought i saw Jimmy Hoffa, rolled over more glass than i thought possible, went through sand and little off roading, cross back over to surface streets until i picked up the riverbed at Del Amo. Rather than return the same way i went to Seal Beach and up the San Gabriel River bed and home. A 22 mile round trip turned into 44 miles. Its going to be really hot during this summer because they are covering the concrete with asphalt. It was only in the low 80s and i could feel the heat difference between the asphalt cover vs concrete.

The thing is, I really don't think that surface was so bad, at least from say florence down to LB Blvd. South of LB Blvd it had that vein like buildup but certainly rideable.

SGRT south of the 405 was/is horrible with all those cracks. North of there it's fine too.

Due to the asphalt being put down on the Rio Hondo/LA riverbed rode the San Gabriel North from Firestone all the way past the Santa Fe Dam to where it meets Hwy 39.
Was very pleased that most of the trail was newly resurfaced and painted. Rode part way last year so went all the way today. 58 miles round trip. Uphill going, 15 to 20 mph head wind coming back. Hope the resurfacing goes all the way to Seal Beach.

Yeah, I don't know where all of a sudden they got the money but sure is nice.

So right now on the SGRT, how far down does the new pavement go?

I believe the new pavement will take you down to Peck Road. Nearly everything north of there has been repaved. The only parts not repaved are some of the underpasses and a short section from the northeast side of Santa Fe Dam across to the Nature Center. There is also some painting of the mileage markers to be completed on a few sections, but otherwise the project seems to be done north of Peck Road.

The trail still has some limitations, somewhat narrow and limited visibility in some underpasses and tunnels, but the riding surface on the portion that has been repaved makes the ride much smoother and more enjoyable.

The new pavement is down SGRT to at least the Rio Hondo/SGRT crossover - the paver just ran straight through the cross, so the crossover is paved, too. The SGRT pavement south of the cross (the dam, etc.) is not paved, though it's still in good condition. Neither is the road into Legg Lake, which does need it.

Last Friday went from Firestone to the foot of the Santa Fe Dam then to Seal Beach then back home. The real bad section was only patched in places. They did not do a very good job as the patches were just as bumpy as the rest of the surrounding part. They have the ruts circled with paint so it looks like patches instead of a complete redo.
