I've put on quite a few races in S.B. and it is very anti-cycling. Most of them dealt with campus-police at UCSB, a couple were downtown with SBBC. Ever since Sandra died, there's been very little success with putting on downtown races. It comes down to the police being very lazy and they don't want to walk the beat. One of my friends is a DA and avid cyclist and he's very discouraged by the attitude he sees from the inside. They make you jump through numerous costly hoops to get your permits and have very strict requirements. So much so, that very few races break-even or are even profitable.

It's much easier to put on a race out in Goleta, in I.V. or on campus than in S.B. The costs ends up being significantly less. You pay for fewer ambulances and EMTs and fewer police officers to "manage" the closed streets.

Santa Barbara police are decidedly not the most diligent. On New Year's Eve, one of my neighbors slammed into my pickup truck and left a big dent...
I had his red paint on my truck, my brown paint on his truck, and pictures of the damage to both vehicles.
A young Officer Todd Stoney of SBPD took my "case" and sat on it for weeks without ever filing a report. I called every two weeks to check on the progress, but there never was any. He claims he knocked on the neighbor's door, but no one answered, so apparently they were off the hook. No police report = screwed.

Are people getting more stuffy and stupid lately? That area has festivals and kids events pretty much every single weekend!
