Got the word from Annette on the GMR blog that the road was still open as of about 7PM Friday evening. Not sure what that holds for the weekend, but is at least a good sign.
Try it at night. It is always a good ride and a lot cooler the way temps are right now.

Never tried it at night, but it sounds like a good idea . . . except for the rumors I've heard about street racers up there at night.
Maybe not an accurate rumor?

The times I have been up at night I have run into no traffic at all. All most have wished to see a little more traffic just in case anything had happened. Try it, I am sure you will like it. In fact if you want someone to do it with, let me know. I work nights, but if you do it on a Tuesday or Saturday evening, chances are I would be free to ride with you. I am old and slow, but I always make it.

Thanks Hillbasher,
I rode it today and there a was car over the side in broad daylight, so I guess time of day doesn't really matter.
I am old (60) and kind of slow (lots of riders passed me) but 2:05 from Boulder Springs to the Lodge, then another 1:03 to the Ski Lifts.
Lots of riders on GMR/GRR and quite a few on the Ski Lifts section too.

Oh yeah, one of the young guys. Re riding GMR at night. I drove up to Dawson saddle on AC last evening to see what it was like at night in the forest. The lights from the Antelope Valley were awesome but once the sun was completly gone it got pitch black. Very spookey, I kept hearing noises in the dark. I stopped at Jarvi outlook on the way down and the sound of croaking frogs was really loud. That's near where they have the forest closed because of the yellow legged frog , sounded like lots of them to me. You will never get me on a bike at night up there, thats wild country in the dark. Just sayin.

Young compared to you, old compared to almost everyone else who rides up there (oh, and Clem who is 70 something). Anyway. I've ridden a lot of night hours on doubles, so I don't think it would be all that scary.
I'd be more afraid of teenagers in Riced-Out Civics (Eclipse, Lancer EVO, WRX Subie etc.) than the wild animals.
But that's just me.
