2nd time
Up GMR today. This time left from my house at 9:51am rode 30.25 miles to reach GMR and Sierra Madre Ave. in two hours. Brief rest and started up, seamed a little harder but i kept going, rested at 34.75 miles and looked at my gears, i was in the 42/21! I had forgot to shift to 42/24, did so and the rest was easier to the shack. 39.6 miles. Brief rest, almost out of drinks, popped a halls cherry flavor cough drop and started back at 1:45pm. Had lunch at Carls Jr at Todd and Foothill, filled up the bottles and went home, 4:51 against a 8 to 15 mph head wind. Total trip 79.70 miles(my longest to date), 13.2 avg, Elevation gain 3250 feet(most to date) ride time of 5:59:23 (most time in the saddle one trip), 2316 calories(most in one trip) and total time of 7 hours. NO cramps, no saddle sores, made sure to get out of the saddle as much as possible going home.

Thanks guys, i think to go further into the mountains i need better gearing. What is your basic climbing combo? Right now i can churn out 5mph in 42/24 but it is a lot of work. Resting up today and feel pretty good.

I run a 27 in the back. I spend most of my time in the mountains and I like to climb, but am not into suffering. Too old for that.

A lot of that has to do with what is comfortable for you. I have never been one to ride at a high cadence. Even while climbing I tend to push bigger gears. I went up GMR today in 42-17 to 42-21. That is fairly typical for me on all but very steep roads (or dirt). Experiment until you find what works best.

I have different setups, my Cannondale has a standard double 39/25. I do the shack with an 8 mph average and to the village with a 9.5.
My beater bike (Lemond) had a triple but I spend most of my time without the 3 lowest cogs which keeps the same gear inch combo as the 12/25 on the Cannondale. Unless I'm just cruising taking pics, I might use one or two more cogs for funzies.

Thanks, i am looking at some cassettes with a 28 or 30 on the back. I looked also for a 39 small ring. May get the cassette first and put it on a separate wheel and just switch it out when i go joy riding in the mountains.
