    Limestone Open Access

If any of you have not participated in riding Limestone Canyon, I just want to bring your attention to the fact each month there is now an "open access" day where you can come in and ride without being docent led. Limestone offers everything from beginning level to quite advanced trails. This last Sunday, we did 12 miles. We started up, in the morning fog, Limestone Canyon to the "Sinks". From there we climbed to Box Springs. We tried a new trail, the singletrack to Lomas Ridge. Very technical and I had to walk here and there but it was a great way to get to Lomas Ridge. Once on the Ridge, the fog started to clear. We continued to climb and ascend until the Dripping Springs Trail which is a fun, technical downhill. Once again on Limestone Canyon, we continued on to Cactus. We climbed Cactus and finished down Limestone Ridge to Raptor, the new very technical (but really fun) singletrack down to Limestone.

Check out the schedule and I hope to see you out next time.

For schedules go to irlandmarks. org.

    Here are some photos:

Been a little while since I've been there. I like open days better than the organized rides (though I do like them, too) because I can choose my route
I signed up for yesterday, but was too worked from CX racing on Sat and my shoes were still soaked from the water and mud.
I also had to take the summer off due to thumb surgery.
I will see you out there, I am sure.
There are also open days at Bommer as well as docent rides all over the old Irvine Ranch.

Jim: next time you come out try this new route...

Up Limestone to Cactus to Limestone Ridge. Travel down that to Rapture and return to Limestone Canyon. Go back up Limestone Canyon and climb to Box Springs (Bolero Springs). From Bolero take the Bolero singletrack to Loma Ridge at the time ofd the Box Springs climb, turn left then right). It's very doable except for one hairy, rocky spot (I have to walk). Take Loma Ridge across to Dripping Springs or down Hicks Haul (they have now opened up Hick's Haul to the Loma Access Trail) and then return to Augustine. Very doable and fun ride. See you next time.

Raptor/Rapture? Either way, sounds new. I'll probably give it a try. Thanks Pam.

Steep stuff is mostly wash out, not skids. All of the trails get little use but hey you are right, people should be responsible and not brake!!! Frankly I walk down most of the steep hills.

From what I understand, those trails were properly designed within IMBA's sustainable trail standards. With that in mind, I called it what I saw it as, a skid rut. Also, could you please explain why the trail widens out so much near that softball-sized rock near the bottom of the rut? Would it be that such a minor obstacle warrants veering so far off the line that it would double the width of the singletrack? Don't most people ride full-suspension bikes in the dirt around here?

Not trying to be obtuse... but I am probably not the right person to answer your question. I can put you in touch with the gentleman who is responsible for trail maintenance if you need an answer... I just like to ride there; I'm not in control!!!

I know who it is as well, but would not expect a straight answer from him. This is why I asked you instead of going to the source.
