Angeles Crest Via Clear Creek to Newcomb's

Me and my GF rode up from sunland to Newcomb's today via Clear Creek. We went up Big T Canyon road to the forest highway, then to the right towards clear creek. There's a detour sign pointing people at Big T, but the road is actually open-- when we rode up on saturday they had a big lightup sign saying it's open all the way to Mt Wilson, but since it was a weekday and a lot of people commute through, I think they put the detour sign back up. No closed road signs though, and none up at the top either, if you were coming down that way (only closed to La Canada).

The pavement on the forest highway hasn't been redone, but the pavement on the 2 from Clear Creek pretty much all the way to Newcomb's is in great shape. Traffic was really light. Newcomb's is still pointing people via upper big T with signs, but even after the top of Upper Big T it was light traffic.

Newcomb's is open and serving food, but they're kind of living on the edge right now, because there's barely enough business to keep them open. They fed us well, and had a moderate number of people there, but not packed, and I imagine it was pretty light on saturday, too, based on the traffic we saw when we rode to Red Box.

We descended via Upper Big T to the Forest Highway-- Upper Big T looks and feels like they just chipsealed it, and there's still a bunch of gravel along the side of the road, as well as some patches of gravel in the road and along the white line on the upper 5 miles or so.

Weather was perfect, and the visibility out over the basin was great.

Good to hear Chris. That section of AF wasn't the greatest before the fire. Would be nice if it were repaved one of these days. The lower section of AC should be reopened anytime now.

Aha, chip seal! I wondered what the hell that was on Upper Big T. It looks like new pavement, but doesn't feel like it. What exactly is chip seal?
