18 North climb
Finally climbed 18 from the Lucerne Valley to Big Bear. This is a very below the radar, tough, scenic climb. Started in San Bernardino, climbed up 330, rode around the lakes (Big Bear and Baldwin) and then descended 18 to the Lucerne Valley, turned around and climbed up 18 back to Big Bear.
My legs weren't feeling great all day and when we got into the Lucerne Valley I know I was in trouble. As we started the climb, my garmin read over 100F and we had ~11 miles and ~3,500' to go. The beginning of the climb is similar to many of the Sierras climbs-- i.e., fairly straight, upward sloping, boring and desert-like. As we climbed up, the road began to get curvier, the trees appeared and the grade became very variable. There were several 10-14% ramps as we climbed and with the heat I didn't feel very well. Closer to the top, the road turned more into a traditional curvy climb, with long 5-7% stretches and additional steep ramps. The temperature did cool a bit toward the top, but it was still very hot. Technically, the climb isn't that difficult and with fresh legs and good temperatures wouldn't have been a problem. But when I did it yesterday, it was just brutal.
You can see the climb here (along with the rest of my ride, the climb appears in the middle of the profile, appearing like a bowl):
