You want to clean and lube your bike immediately after the ride. The grit can be hard on bearings, but this is more of a concern where it actually rains more than 20 days out of the year. For what it's worth, I put on a crappy set of wheels with tougher but slower tires if I expect to get wet. Go have fun!

It's won't hurt the bike in the least. Just give it a quick wipe down when you're home, and lube up the chain a bit if you're strict about these sorts of things.

If you ride in the rain a lot, especially in the mountains, it's hard on the brakes and the drivetrain. Rims will wear down quicler, too.
Lube it like everyone said and if the rims get water in them and start sloshing, take the tires off and dry them out.

The wear and tear on your bike should be the least of your worries. The safety factor should be. If you are riding on a a bike trail, you should be ok. If you are riding on the streets then you should realize these facts. When car windshields are wet and wipers are on cars don't see you. I've been commuting to work for over 18 years, Iv'e only been hit by cars twice, both times it was raining and both times were in broad daylight. Be Safe out there..

Rode in to work in the rain this morning. Encountered large amounts of crunchy hail for about a quarter mile. Beautiful sunrise, exciting commute. Fenders and 28mm Schwalbe Marathons made crossing mudflows and water crossings easy, not to mention retina-searing lighting.

Be sure to stay "off the paint" lines and wet leaves on the street; their slickness will take you down in wet conditions. Also, be sure to use brake sooner then you usually would do as wet rims will have less "grab."
