Wind!!!!!!!!!!

The wind today was terrible! I almost got blown off my bike several times. Spent a long time going 12-14mph on flat terrain. Ugh.

I ended up doing laps around a park in Chino. I was afraid of getting blown over riding in traffic. I was going as slow as 8mph in the granny gear into the headwind and up to 25-30 with the tailwind (on flat land.)

Wasn't windy at home so I wasn't expecting it. I noticed the planes are landing to the east so it must be the Santa Anas.

i got blown off my bike 2x today; first going up PCH at the Pepperdine hill and then again on Latigo Cyn. Decided to "live to ride another day" and go home. Had a great ride planned in preparation for Central Coast Double in a few weeks. Straight headwind is one thing, but gusty high winds coming from all directions is absolutely insanity!

That is definitely one thing that bugs me about cycling. Wind is not fun when its heading towards you!

I started out at 6am from Irvine. Road to Long Beach without any wind in either direction. I literally ate my Jack In The Box meal and as I turned to head back the wind started. By the time I got to Sunset Beach it was fierce and when I hit Newport it was absolutely miserable. I was literally going 12mph around the Back Bay. As a big guy (around 200lbs) I was almost blown off my bike for the first time on Harvard Avenue. It was a direct crosswind and had I not had a deathgrip on my handlebars it would be all over.

Took me an hour and a half to get to Long Beach and over two hours to get back. One of the most miserable rides I've ever had. As soon as I saw the planes from John Wayne taking off the wrong way I knew it was Santa Anas and I was a deadman heading East.

That's one of the reasons I use my other bike with box rims when there's a lot of crosswinds. Other than that, it depends on where u live/ride that the wind speed could b dangerous.

Sheesh guys, it wasn't *that* bad yesterday.

Wind is one of those things that messes with your brain. A guy that might love riding up a mountain for hours on end might also hate riding into a headwind, even though the effort levels may be very similar. It's very strange.

Anyway, I end up looking at power meter readings during a headwind rather than looking at how abysmally slow I'm going, and that keeps me going. As long as I'm putting out the proper wattage, I try to keep a clear head. It's you vs nature, enjoy it when it happens!

We have an overpass over the interstate and when the wind is moderate to high I walk the bike
over it. It is a wide path, but a long drop, with cars and trucks going 80+mph below you. The
rail is just the wrong height for bikes.

Took a night ride on SART to Huntington Beach. The wind had mostly died down by then, but that meant the gnats were out in force. Swallowed a sewer gnat near the treatment plant in Fountain Valley. Little guy put up a good fight but eventually I got him all the down. Hate the little beasts.

Beautiful night for a ride. Time to upgrade the lights.
