2012 SoCal Century a Month Challenge

2012 SoCal Century a Month Challenge

Ok folks it’s that time of year again to start thinking about your goals for 2012. What better goal than to do a century a month to keep your fitness level up and to be ready for any organized ride you wish to do without worrying if you’re “in shape” for it. Riding a century a month is a great way to train for doing Brevets, Double Centuries or Multi day tours.

    CENTURY FAQ:
A century is defined by the UMCA as being from 90-149 miles and completing it within an 11 hour time limit including time off the bike and maintaining an average of 8.33mph.

    What Counts?
    • Any Organized/sponsored ride that is billed as a century
    • Any informal group or solo ride that totals between 90-149 miles
    • Any Indoor Century: You may ride indoors "centuries" (six hours) for credit.
    • Tandem Century: Centuries may be done on a tandem bicycle. A tandem rider accumulates tandem mileage independent of partner.

    • Double centuries count, but only as a single century.
    • This is self reported. The honor system is all we have so if you lie about your data may you be cursed with thorns on every trail you ride.
Since the UMCA allows up to 2 make up rides you can start as late as March

PLEASE, DO NOT REPLY TO POSTS OR POST ANYTHING OTHER THAN YOUR DATA.

Please post the data for your century/month as follows:

    Date of Ride:
Type of Ride: (group ride or solo ride)
Name of organized ride or route:
    Actual Mileage:
    Ride Time:
    Total Time:
    Avg. Speed:
Altitude Climbed: (if available, either by route map, or cycling computer)
    Weather conditions:
Synopsis of Ride: (please be respectful as you never know who might read this)

Remember, even if you don't make all twelve, please still post your data for as many months as you can - all centuries are an accomplishment! So, although this is a challenge, it is in the spirit of camaraderie!

If those of you who are planning to go stealth this year, or are on the fence want to join the fun please let me know. If you do not see your name or century months updated, please PM me, and I will update your info. Thank you!

Synopsis of Ride: "The course follows the Moorpark Ridge to Ventura, over Casitas Pass to Carpinteria, down the coast to Ventura/Oxnard and back to Moorpark" - map. Count me in. I am doing it in the C&V R-12 classification. Did the same Views of Anacapa 200k on 1/1/12. I have submitted 4 200k permanents for RUSA approval that start and end in Palmdale, just a short Metrolink ride away... The starting point location is about 2 miles from the Metrolink station. When the permanents are approved I will post them on the http://www.pchrandos.com/html/permanents.html site. I am also organizing a 200k brevet in the Antelope Valley for April 14th, 2012.

    You'all come and join in!

    Altitude Climbed: 11,192ft
Weather conditions: Chilly morning - strong headwinds/crosswinds along SART, up through Corona and coming back to the beach via the San Luis Rey River Bicycle Path.
Synopsis of Ride: "Starting in Foothill Ranch, this route follows Santiago Canyon Road to Orange, to Newport Beach on bike paths and the Back Bay, north on the PCH to the SART (Santa Ana River Trail), onto Corona, south on the I-15 corridor, around Lake Ellsinore, through the avocado orchards of De Luz, to Fallbrook, toward the coast to Oceanside, then north on the PCH to Dana Point and inland back to Foothill Ranch." - Map here. Lots of brutal double-digit rollers from Wildomar to De Luz to Fallbrook and beyond. Ate over 5,000 calories on the bike...couldn't reach my goal of a sub-12hr finish, especially with the head-winds, but was pleased to finish in less than 13 hours (about 15 minutes behind the 1st finisher who was on a Cervelo P3 time-trial bike).

Synopsis of Ride: The route followes the Angeles Forest/Angeles Crest highway from Palmdale to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. At the Rose Bowl you meet up with the Velo-Retro club and ride a 25-mile loop through Pasadena to Arcadia and Sierra Madre before returning to the Rose Bowl. Return is the same route through the Angeles Forest/San Gabriel Mountains. Map. Fun day for the Velo-Retro ride, cold headwind through mountains on the way back. I abandoned when I got in cell phone range after finishing the Angeles Forest Hwy segment on the return. Finished 120 of planned 130 miles.

Synopsis of Ride: First long ride of the year after taking the last two weeks of 2011 off while on vacation abroad. We set aside this weekend to do our January century and committed to ride as if it were a paid event "rain or shine". It rained. A lot.

We originally planned to ride all the way down to Golden Lantern and make our way back north up towards Santiago Canyon but several flats and a cut sidewall discouraged us from venturing too far from any potential help.

    Date of Ride: 4/19/2012
    Type of Ride: Solo
Route: Escondido to Julian and back, with a loop through RB to get mileage in the 90's
Actual Mileage: 91.4 mi (GPS track) / 91.9 mi (GPS odometer)
    Ride Time: 7:12
    Total Time: 7:47
Altitude Climbed: 6684 ft (Garmin Connect elevation corrections) / 6776 ft (Strava elevation corrections) / 7437 ft (GPS altimeter)
    Weather: warm
    Ride Synopsis:
    * Highland Valley Rd: less traffic than I expected, need to get out there more often
    * Old Julian Highway: farm road, very little traffic, good pavement, almost no smell
    * 78 between Old Julian Hwy and Santa Ysabel: one section of the road I don't look forward to seeing again: paved shoulder is 1 foot wide or almost completely absent most of the way. Fortunately, only 6 miles. Unfortunately, seems to be the only way through.
    * 78 between Santa Ysabel and Wynola Rd: finally, nice wide shoulder.
    * Wynola Rd / Farmers Rd: shaded, decent pavement, almost no traffic. I could call it scenic if not for all the barbed wire.

Weather conditions: Warm & clear. Beautiful in fact. One guy complained that his bike computer said 97, but that didn't seem very likely.
Ride Synopsis: Click here for map and elevation profile. Tough, tough ride! I decided against bringing a computer and it was a novel experience. Beautiful, beautiful area after the rain we've had. There was even a little snow up on the mountain. I must have looked down at my stem where the computer usually sits at least a dozen times on the ride. Didn't even bring HRM.
