Any One Still Riding SART?

I didn't want to continue the SART Mugging thread but just wondering if anyone is riding the section through Santa Ana on a regular basis or are you avoiding it? I used to take it up to Katella from the 405 FWY but now take Red Hill and cut through Tustin & Orange to Katella bypassing SART completely. There's a lot of lights but I'd rather not lose my bike & get beaten....

Just wondering if other's are bypassing all together.

I haven't been through since the mugging. I used to ride it once a week. Now I just do Angels stadium and north, or roads.

I'll be back on the south SART once things warm up, bike traffic increases, and my mind forgets about the unlikely threat of a daytime mugging.

I've been through there quite a few times but I have a bunch of girls to protect me.

I do see plenty of small skinny solo riders out there, and some solo women riders. I'm thinking they must not know about the muggings but either way, they didn't seem bothered by any of the muggers.

I plan on staying as far from S(h)ART and Santa Ana as possible when I get back in the saddle. I was commuting on it daily from Angel Stadium to Victoria.
When I get a new bike, I will be taking Redhill to get through to work. It will add abour 20-30 minutes to my commute. But takes the chances of being robbed of everything again down to nearly 0%.

I almost always ride solo. I take SART from Adams to PCH often. My ride to Orange has always been on surface streets. Never have felt safe through the Santa Ana stretch.

Had a homeless guy give me a patch kit when the Schwinn's front tire went flat. Three days of not shaving and downscale bike & kit make one a sympathetic character.

I use to ride it solo every now and then on the weekend, but since the reports haven't gotten back over. Would like to again, but would rather do it with at least another rider or more.

So if anyone is interested msg me. Ideally weekend mornings around 8:30-9AM. I start from yorba linda and go to beach and beach and back. 1-2 breaks at most avg. 18.5mph for the entire trip. (willing to adjust). I'm trying to train to maybe do a race/event in the future.

I ride solo. I'll probably be there tomorrow. I'm not worried about it. If it happens, it happens. SART is a great trail, and its close by, and im not going to give it up because of the recent muggings. Hopefully the recent busts help. I'm riding an inexpensive bike, maybe thats why i'm not too concerned.

I have been riding it 3-4 times a week as part of my commute from riverside and I have not seen any bangers for the last 3 weeks. The sherriffs have started to do their training runs towards the beach of late in response to the muggings. I have seen more SAPD cars at the park near Godinez High School and the Fairview park just after school lets out. Not to worry, keep riding.

I love the hand-wringing in these SARTP threads.

Beanz, the wolves would leave you alone, even without the girls. They don't prey on Alphas.

I ride towards PCH on the SART only on Saturday mornings now. On Sundays, I ride to Weir, Fairmont, Serrano area to ride my loop.

After Memory Lane (Going towards PCH) I am more attentative to my surroundings. I also will slow down/speed up to be within eyesight of another cyclist.

I have seen SAPD vehicles every once in a while; however, the day is long and the SART is a long stretch..

I almost always ride Solo on the SART...

I still ride it, just more aware of my surroundings and try to keep another rider in sight if I'm alone.

Hey Steve, where in the Riverside do you start from? I feel like trying the commute to Irvine occasionally but couldn't quite figure out getting to where SART starts at Corona.
(right now riding to La Sierra Metrolink and hopping on it)

Thanks all, I'll probably stay off SART north of the 405 mid week for now as my mid week rides are usually solo. I still ride between 405 & PCH and besides a run in with a loose dog have never had any issues on that stretch.

Big Bird, lulz.

Where is the hand-wringing about the serial killer that was killing transients between Imperial and Kraemer/Glassel? What if a semi-copycat who has a bone to pick with cyclists decided to start rampaging in that area?

Road it this morning, round trip from PCH to the Stadium & back to PCH. Only people in the area where the muggings took place were a few ladies power walking and gabbing loudly in Vietnamese, and County maintenance work trucks doing some repair work on some type of valve.

Regarding riding inland: I wouldn't have a problem riding inland farther than the 405. Up to the soccer fields (Centenial Park) is pretty safe - its housing in HB,Costa Mesa, then industrial up to the Warner/Harbor Blvd interchange (the soccer fields are about 1 mile beyond that, about 7 miles inland). The next few miles through the Santa Ana area is where the problems occur. A few homeless folks living under the bridges just inland from the 405 (Talbert/MacArthur, Slater), but they aren't an issue.

I start in Woodcrest (Mockingbird Canyon) at 0430 Duffern to Stewart North to Victoria, West to Filmore. North to Indiana, North on Buchanen, West on Magnolia. Magnolia turn into E. 6th street. Continue to Promenade turn North. Left @ Sampson.Right on Railroad, Left on Auto Center Drive, Under Freeway continue on Serfas Club. Turn Right on Green River. Continue on Green River to SART. It is fairly flat except for Green River area. Traffic can be high at certain times of day.

I've ridden SART every night since the muggings. My commute starts at 7.30 pm at McArther and ends in Yorba Linda . Things have been quiet since the arrests have been made. I do see young males hanging out around 1st and 4th street. I have heard they are members of the same gang that did the jackings. I keep my bear mace in hand and my head up. I'm sure it won't be long before it starts up again

Today was a picture perfect day for cycling on the SART. Tomorrow should be too. I havent seen too many shady characters or suspicious things. I felt more unsafe on the San Gabriel River Trail. Tons of graffiti and it seems to have much fewer cyclists.

Our group rode it yesterday from Angels stadium to Huntington Beach, and saw no suspicious characters. We rode in small groups, no one rode alone.

The only stretch on SGRT that really makes me nervous is that really narrow tunnel near Pio Pico mansion (but I've forgotten the street name). Coyote Creek Trail has a creepy feel to it from about Alondra north.

Hey, Crit, what the heck are you doing in Colorado? Don't you know it gets cold there????

I never stop riding there. Even if I was victim of a mugging I'd still refuse to give those cockroaches "ownership" of the path.

I'd be willing to bet solo female riders (which I've seen many) are a lot safer than guys, even ruthless roaches somewhat respect women's vulnerability and besides, we all know how unpredictable they can be

Pio Pico is off Whittier Blvd. I usually see somebody on the SGRT bike path there smoking stuff you can't buy at 7-11 but nothing menacing.

As for SART, rode the thing from Anaheim to green river and back yesterday - that's way too nice a path to stay off of.
