do you ride mullhulland hwy ? video to make you think twice

I understand and respect that cyclist want things to be safe for them but I also see plenty of cyclist do the same stupid stunts. I can't count the times I've encountered cyclists head on, in my lane around a blind turn while I'm descending GMR. There are plenty of stupid cyclists as well as stupid drivers.

Sadly it has gotten to the point where I have to really protect myself from drivers and cyclists, trail and road.

Ride and drive smart!

LAriverRat 04-03-12 04:48 PM

All thoughs drivers do not know how to power through a curve. Watch out.

TrojanHorse 04-03-12 05:01 PM

That was the biggest collection of overpriced cars with awful drivers I've ever seen.

LAriverRat 04-03-12 05:10 PM

I guess they never heard of down shifting.

That is Rock Store....the photographers up there have made that area very dangerous for cyclists....I was on it 2 weeks ago and some schmuck in a Lamborgini couldnt wait 3 seconds for me to finish a sharp right and almost pushed me into the rocks...

Stealthammer 04-03-12 05:47 PM

That was just another weekend on Mullhulland.....

Mullhulland was much safer back in the '80s when only a small group of riders/drivers knew about it and Decker Canyon Rd, Stunt Rd, Latigo Canyon Rd, Kanan Rd, et al., but I must admit that I did stuffed my bike under quite a few Armco barriers over the years, as well as going through a couple sets of leathers and several helmets...... :D

It actually looks like it is in the hills just above the Rock Store to me, but yeah, the photographers have made several key corners more dangerous over the years because they set up on the turnouts and wait for wealth wannabes and squids to crash or have a close calls. If you stay away from the popular spots there are plenty of nice roads up there to play on though.

It's not all like that. And +1 - some of those guys can barely perform basic maneuvers with their cars.

calamarichris 04-04-12 09:39 AM

Heh--I recognize that corner from many, many motorcycle crash videos. :D You're going to run into that kind of thing on any fun sillystring-road. And it's not like the photographers were encouraging people to drive like that--IMO it's more of a stick than a carrot. Hopefully drivers will be less likely to do it if they know they could be photographed and the photos can easily be subpoenaed by the CHP.

They put rumble strips in the middle of the lanes at Palomar Mountain and it's definitely cooled down Palomar Raceway a few degrees. It's still a fun, fun road on bicycle or motorcycle, even moreso now that there are fewer would-be head-ons to loogie on. Mayhaps Mulholland might benefit from the same treatment?

Funny I almost ran down Bean descending GMR. He was going up.... dead center in the downhill lane.

That is true! I make mistakes every so often as well. I was recording the forum ride but still a dangerous move, I don't deny it.:D

But I will say it had to be on a straightaway as I don't take the opposite lane recording on blind turns. ;)

Does anyone know how to forward this video to the CHP and the Lost Hills Sherrif dept? That's their juristiction

fishymamba 04-04-12 09:03 PM

I hate going up rock store on the weekends wayyy too many cars and motorcycles. I prefer going up westlake/decker, it a much nicer climb with less traffic. It does get kinda steep at one point, so it scares away some people.

Do you really think they don't know what goes on up there?

Yes...they encourage the motorcycles and cars to speed around the turns to get good pictures of themselves....
