Supergo bike shop

I have a pair of Canari shorts that I bought from Supergo in Santa Monica a "few" years ago. I don't remember when, but it was probably at least 10 years ago. They were CHEAP shorts, I think mainly because up the leg in BIG white letters is SUPERGO BLAH BLAH BLAH. I've heard they became another shop. I've heard they were swallowed by Performance. I've heard they became Nashbar. I've heard they went out of business. Obviously, at this point I don't believe any of the "experts" that have weighed in. Anybody know for sure? I don't really care, but the shorts have held up really well and every time I wear them, I wonder. OK, I only have 5 rides in this year, but two of them were in these shorts, and when I was riding before, these were my only shorts, and I would wonder on every ride.

There are multiple independent sources in Google saying that Supergo was swallowed by Performance in 2006. They were definitely still around as Supergo in late '05 and they even had a store in San Diego (though, personally, I don't remember the place), and they were gone by '07.

I only know Supergo from their store in Fountain Valley in O.C. That store became a Performance store as it is now.

Thanks. I guess I could have done that! I've never used this here because I think it's rude, however, based on the fact that it's MY OWN lack of thinking, I think it is only appropriate!

Thanks for all of the nice compliments and appreciation of my work at Supergo. Although I wanted to get back into the bike business during the last few years while I waited for my non-competition agreement with Performance to run out, I finally decided to stay retired. Yes, I am very sorry that the sale to Performance worked out as it did. I must have been temporarily crazy to hope and believe that it would turn out any different. The corporate culture gap between me and Performance's top management is on the lvel of North versus South Korea. The bike industy and the market has changed so much since 2002, that I do not believe there could ever be another business like the Supergo of 1990-2002. My team created a novel and fantastic business model that was the envy of bike dealers around the world. Through great prices and profuse, detail oriented catalog copy and an expert staff, we brought high quality products and fine service to countless people who would not otherwise have had access to that level. I pushed my staff to see business from the customer's point of view. In an ecomony where things are never repaired, only replaced and it's almost impossible to find anyone who really understands what they're selling, Supergo stores really stood out as an anomoly. We sold stuff at bargain prices yet gave customers Nordstrom level service. I am very proud of the countless former Supergo employees who have taken the valuable business knowledge they learned and opened their own bike and other stores, or moved into high management positions at important companies. Sean Flynn, my former General Manager at Fountain Valley, owns a fantastic store in Huntington Beach--SurfCity Cycles. Another GM, Mike Olson of Supergo Oceanside, now owns 4 Trek stores in San Diego. And, Jim Whitsett, my Santa Monica GM owns Cynergy Bike Shop in Santa Monica. Thanks again to all of you who were my loyal and valued customers.

Yep, I also patronised that particular store and still have many of the quality items I bought there. My very favorite purchase are two mountain bike shorts that just won't quit (so glad I bought two of them). I have had them for about twenty years now. Well-made and the fit is great. Just quality products at great prices. The store personnel were also great. Everybody from the managers, the mechanics and salespeople.

I do miss the old Supergo.

There was also a Supergo in Tustin.Irvine (?). South on the 5 fwy. We visited that store once jsut for kicks. Now there is a Performance but a slightly different location.

I loved Supergo. I got my 9 speed DA shifters there for $199 while the LBS wanted $299. Not to mention I got 2 DA 9 speed derailleurs for $64 each no tax at a 4th of July sale. Still got one new in the tool box. First on still going strong.

Another fond memory of Supergo. I used to fly back to LA to visit the inlaws (from Singapore) and I'd get parts n stuff at supergo. We bought my father in law a whole bike there too, and he's still riding that thing.

Good prices too, can't find an LBS like that anymore.

Supergo memories

I can go back even further - I bought a Supergo Access Comp Mt. Bike from the store in Santa Monica way back in about 1986 or 87. Still have the bike. This was before they even had suspension on Mt. bikes. It was a top of the line bike back in its day. I've got some Supergo shorts also. Good memories of their stores.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that the shorts were their house brand. The materials were just great, and they were very stylish. The really unbelievable thing is the fact that I have not seen that fabric used on any mountain bike shorts I've seen since. And then performance took over, then put a lot of the Supego branded stuff on sale. I ended up with about a dozen Supergo water bottles that I must have paid about a dollar each or less for.
