    Mount Laguna Roll Call!

    Haaseg... Idoru05... ? Who else?

If it's your first time, be sure to bring a compact or triple!
And don't go burning any matches or contesting any summits before that final climb!
Hardest century or event I've ever done by far. (We'll see if I can still make that statement after Breathless Agony on 5/5. Right now, I'm thinkin' 'yeah'.)

I'll be there in my usual mondrian chubbiness.

Why is this more difficult then any of the KOM's or Le Etape, High Sierra Century, Santa Barbara Century (Galbrator)? or Have you not dones any of those?
I have never done any of the Adventure Corp rides but I do want to.

Yes, Laguna was harder IMO than l'Etape (and I finished 146th, about an hour behind Dave Zabriskie, despite there being NO WATER at the Azusa aid station when I was really counting on some.)
I'm glad because this year it's the Saturday before l'Etape (which is the Saturday before Breathless Agony.)
Hopefully it will H me TFU a little before l'Etape.
I've ridden Gibraltar, but never the SB or High Sierra. Perhaps those are harder? Any veterans of both care to chime in?

I don't think Laguna is harder than BA or BA harder than Laguna, just different. The two climbing sections of Laguna is not that hard, steady but not hard. The last section on Laguna is a serious b*tch. Tight, steep, rough roads. BA has longer climbs, not as steep (Oak Glen is steep but the Laguna third climb is just tough) just longer. Also the ending is pretty similar, mostly downhill. BA has two difficult sections - damnation alley and the final 8 miles up to Onyx. Damnation alley is only 6 - 7% but is just monotonously straight and nothing to indicate it's grade. Onyx only because of you are climbing into altitude and it's the last climb of the day. I would equate the third Laguna climb similar to Decker if Decker was the last climb in the Mulholland challenge.

It's hard because, even though each loop gets shorter, the roads get steeper and rougher. It' hard to recover because there's really no flat sections except the run out past the lake at the beginning of the course. If you find yourself on a descent, it's only to get to the next climb. Also, it warms up quick once the sun is up and the clouds are gone. The climbs are very exposed. Have fun on Pine Creek. It's ofter times faster to walk.

I'd join you guys but I have a 600k that weekend.

    Sissy.

Thanks for the input Ian. I can climb 6-8% pretty well all day long, but those sharp little climbs really take it out of me.
Pine Creek has all of the sharpness with none of the littleness. Bound to be easier with the triple.

I think BA is tougher overall but the 3rd loop of Mt. Laguna is tougher than Oak Glen or Onyx. It's not the mileage, it's the grade and road conditions. I've done Noble Cyn/Pine Creek earlier in rides and it's still hard.

Ian's right; the altitude at Onyx is noticeable. The extra 2K over Palomar is a big difference.

Plus you say dam nation alley is long and goes on for ever. Onyx Summit has the same turn for about 15x and it looks the same till you get to the top.

How curvy are the roads when you descend during Breathless Agony? Will I be using the brakes a lot, or is it more fast and swoopy?

Trying to figure out if I should bring an aluminum front rim, or use my regular carbon. The carbon is fine on GMR/GRR and various other climbs, but miles of 10% switchbacks could be dodgy on them.

I'm starting to get the feeling that I'm in over my head on this one. But, I'm signed up and paid, so I'm just going to do the best I can.

I think this ride plays mind tricks on everyone who is registered. I know I climb better now than I did when I tried this event two years ago, but I still think I'm in over my head, lol.

What's the worst that can happen? You paid money to suffer, right? Do your best and whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Oh crud, I'd forgotten about that. Maybe you are in over your head on this one after all.

I'll be the jolly, chubby fellow in La Vie Claire colors, poking fun of all the compacts. I look forward to meeting you too!

Haha--or is Mapei the European branch of Krispy Kreme donuts?

Aww Chris. I think I'm gonna skip it this year. I really wanted to ride my bike with a triple. But I'll see. I just did the Mulholland with the vintage. ugh. But at least I had a compact on it. If I do the Mt. Laguna, I will have to my ex trade weekends for about 3 rides. And I like spending weekends with them. But we'll see. I did the Mulholland on spur of the moment. I registered Friday morning!! As usual, no training, wrong bike, hungover, 2 hours sleep before Mulholland.
