New to the city and looking for routes.

Hey all. I'm fresh to LA and need to find some quick, usable routes around the city. I live near Burbank and Van Nuys. Any advise would be dope.

Los Angeles is a very large place, so it would be helpful to know where you'd like to go--or if you're looking to ride for recreation or training, what kinds of routes you'd like.

Meanwhile, if you haven't already seen it, you might be interested in the bicycle map prepared by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority:

http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/bi...a_bike_map.pdf (2.5 MB PDF)
http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/bi...ke_details.pdf (4.4 MB PDF)

Note that this map emphasizes officially-designated bikeways, which are not universally well-designed, safe or pleasant to use; there are many other fine streets for bicycling that have no bicycle-specific signs or pavement markings.

"Dope..." Careful how you use that word in a cycling forum!

But seriously....welcome to SoCal. I live in Long Beach, so I know some great routes along the ocean, but I'm not familiar with the Valley area. I'm sure you'll get plenty of responses shortly.

Hi and welcome to the LA area. The San Fernando Valley Bicycle Club, which has ride starts close to your home, has many great rides and routes. Here is their link: http://www.sfvbc.org/

If you want to go down into LA, a good safe route is over Sepulveda, which lands you in the Westwood district.
