Again? Jesus Christ...like history repeating. PCH + drunk drivers = death and injury to cyclists.

That's a messy part of PCH too with all the traffic and parked cars. I'll be riding through there today at about 3pm, wish me luck.

Those comments below the story are depressing...

I was riding on PCH in that same spot just an hour prior. This is pissing me off. Even during the middle of the day we are not safe. At least they caught the driver.

What's really gonna piss me off is when they dig further into this story, and find (as they usually do) the driver has repeated prior arrests for DUI.

I rode through sunset beach today and glimpsed a ghost bike out of the corner of my eye... would they have one up already for him? It was up against one of the buildings on the south-east bound side.

There were several disturbing comments, most of which included the opinion that bikes do not belong on the street, and several which stated the opinion that bikes on the street need to stay all the way to the right.

There is an old saying about opinions that I will not repeat here.

Anyone else feel like Hungtington Beach/PCH needs a MASSIVE Critical Mass ride to bring attention to this issue?

I support the basic idea behind CM, but find it unfortunate that a small number of cyclists show up for these in full road rage mode, which defeats the purpose of promoting cycling on roads. There was a recent CM in San Diego where the local television press (don't even get me started on those clowns), played up the hooliganism, and spouted rhetoric in full support of the "stay on the sidewalk" crowd. I would love to do one, if we could insure all the bikers were being good, rule following (right hand rule at stops signs, etc.), vehiculists.

Thanks for posting that.

I just read what Kenneth's sister wrote about him. Quite moving.

I hope and pray that his family finds the courage and fortitude to bear his loss.

Perhaps a Sobriety Checkpoint on PCH?

Sounds like there should be a "ride of silence" in HB. Why do "we" have to wait until May?

How about a tribute ride for both Kenneth Prevatte and Roger Lippman? Put the word out on all the local cycling message boards, and contact the cycling clubs in Long Beach and Orange County?

Not only that, but the residents aren't the ones who hit cyclists. It's the people coming to the beach from inland cities.

Best thing to do is find a different route and/or get up at the crack of dawn. By the time noon rolls around, you should either be home are far away from PCH.

Unfortunately, it's the family members who pay when a drunk or reckless driver hits someone.

There are safer routes in the area with better scenery, terrain, and pavement.

Roadies don't do CM rides, except for the Velo Allegro "New Year's Day" ride.

It takes only a few to ruin it for Road cyclists. I think the cops can tell the difference between Anarchist Fixed gear riders and us.

How about mandatory jail time for first time DUI offenders ? Oh wait, that might get in the way of Americans love affair with being drunk and reckless and killing people.

I rode past that ghost bike today. And the one for Roger Lippman.

That is three riders locally in the last three months which I am aware of. I'm sure there are more, even locally. Very sad.

It's not the comments from ignorant drivers that bother me--it's the ones that are downright hostile, and even threatning.
