I may have an extra entry - my riding buddy is getting all wussy on me. I'll post something here in the next day or two if that's the case. i know they're fussy (or do I know that) about selling entries before they're sold out, so I'm not sure if that's even feasible. Anybody know for sure how fussy they are?

I rode SART this morning from Imperial down to HB and back. It was hot at the end of the ride! I drank 2.5 liters while riding, plus a little more at a mid-ride stop.

Rode for the first time in 2 weeks this morning locally in Chino/Chino Hills. Saw lots of riders out at 8:30 trying to beat the heat. By 9am it was already bordering on too hot. Can't wait for this heat wave inland to be over. 90 degrees at 7pm means no evening rides on weekdays for me.

Rode the SART this afternoon instead of GMR due to time constraints. Drank 6 lbs of water and still weighed 6lbs less when I got home. I sweated out 12lbs in 59miles. Wow. I of course would have drank a lot more if I was planning on a longer day, but still a bit surprised at how low I was after that.

I drank about 6lbs yesterday over ~57 miles and was about 6-8lbs low too. Not as bad as one hike on Mt Baldy. I overdid it or something and couldn't keep any food or water down, but still had to make my way back to the car. I dropped ~12lbs that day, and it wasn't a hot day D:

Seems like modern guidelines say its safe to lose 2-3% of your water weight during exercise, but beyond that isn't recommended. I'm 159, so losing 4.77lbs would be 3%. Looks like I lost 4%, so not a total disaster. Back up to 159 now, plus BBQ.

Gina and I did 70 miles today on SART, 15.1 average. Felt very slow in the heat. By the time we reached Greeen River, it was 101 in the shade. 106 max. Hit the coast then headed back. Ran into Tammy & Alan so we retruned to the coast again in order to get in the 70 miles. Much cooler heading to the coast the second time.

101 in the shade

Showing off her two tones. I think she needs more sun time without the knicker thingies.

I checked your normal rest stop at the beach to see if you guys were there around 3pm, but didn't see ya. From your strava, it seems maybe I just didn't look hard enough.

BTW, I'm easier to spot now (covered up the bag logo that was there):

Rode SART & headed down to the Huntington Beach pier. I was on my latest resto bike, a 1981 Raleigh Gran Sport. It's a big frame, 62 cm, so any quick stops endanger the precious Merkel twins.

Had a car get on the boardwalk. Scary thing, they'll cruise down a crowded bike & pedestrian path without realizing anything is wrong.

Say whaaaaaaa?

I spend the morning scooting up and down SGRT... headed south until it was closed at 183rd and then headed up to Ramona and then back. Just trying to determine which shorts I want to wear for 100 miles next weekend and I'm still not sure.

Rode the coast route from Oceanside to San Clemente on Saturday and Carlsbad to Dana Point on Sunday.

We were pulled over by Camp Pendleton PD this morning and got an ass reaming for unsafe riding.

Another 41 with Gina. 16.0 average, Average temp 96.1, max temp according to gramin connect 111 but that was sitting in direct sunlight at a refill station for 5 minutes so who knows?

Pretty good that Gina could hold a 16.0 the day after a 70 miler.

Only ended up riding on Saturday this weekend

First of all, props to all of you who rode their regular rides, or one-upped themselves despite the heat

My jaunt up GMR was cut short due to low fluids (Drank more than twice normal and ended up out of fluids before the shack).
Here is my strava:
https://app.strava.com/rides/17869943

And for kicks, I taped some of the downhill, and thanks to some free programs found online, I was able to create this:

If you get more than 6 cyclists together, invariably at least one of them will feel emboldened by the mob mentality, to get hostile & confrontational with motorists, and 'take a lane'.
Ordinarily I just chuckle and appreciate their making me look good by comparison; but Pendleton is not public roads. We are there at the Post Commanding General's pleasure. If enough of us behave like self-righteous cycling advocates, the CG will simply send us packing to Interstate 5, and we can do our self-righteous lane-taking out there.
If these lane-takers weren't such cowards, I would think it noble of them to sacrifice themselves for our perceived collective benefit but...

Glad I ran in to you. See you next weekend up North.

It was really surprising how much weight I lost on Friday. I had a planned century ride across the Antelope Valley and up to Tehachapi, and back. Figured I'd start somewhat early and get the hills over before it got really hot and have an easy time of it. Oh, I felt so strong and so all-powerful when I started out! I ended up having to turn back halfway up the grade because I feared I was pushing it too much and would have trouble on the return. Too make things worse, I had to fight the wind all the way back. Almost made the "call of shame", but limped home.

On the ride, I drank six of those large Camelbak insulated bottles that hold 25 ounces each, (carried three and re-filled at stores on the way); and also drank two 20-oz sodas. Would have drunk more, but the water remaining in the bottles was so hot. Even with all the water I drank, I still lost 7.4 pounds, (3.6% for me). It took Saturday and Sunday to get my weight back up. It was 107 F when I returned home from the ride.

I'm now getting very concerned about my ability to complete Saturday's Cool Breeze. I'm signed up for the double-metric, (my 'birthday ride', triple my age in kilometers and double my age in miles).

---

p.s. To those of you who ride up here in the desert, be sure to hydrate. I noticed on my ride that I was not sweating, at all. At the 25-mile marker, where I had planned to stop and eat a Clif Bar, I noticed that I started sweating. Once I started moving again, no more sweating.

When we are moving, the self-generated wind we create will evaporate any sweat off our skin and keep us dry. Even our jerseys won't get damp. Once we stop riding/moving, that self-generated, evaporative wind ceases and sweat beads appear all over our skin. So, if you are riding up here, don't think you are not losing body water because you are not sweating. YOU ARE! Be sure to drink.

What is great abotu the cool breeze ride is the temps. It will start our around 65-70 and may get as high as 80 and that is it. Plus you have the cool ocean breeze most of the time and a tail wind on the way home if I rememebr correctly. I am doing the double metric as well. I haven't ridden much lately either but I have been excercising. I think we will be fine. And last year the elevation gain was not nearly as close to what was stated. There is also a great cold lunch at midway good dinner at the end and popsicles at the second to last stop!

I did ride the double metric last year, and except for cramping from the 35-mile marker and thereafter, had no real problems. The cramping just meant that I couldn't push as hard as I would have wanted to. My own fault for trying to hang with some hard core riders through Ojai. Yes, the temps were pretty much perfect, and that tail wind from Carpenteria back allowed me to get some pretty good sustained speeds. My only disappointment is that all the "meat" was gone when I got to the lunch stop. That sucked!

I'm planning on not wasting so much time at the stops this year and will carry a bunch of my own food. I'll stop long enough to re-fill my water bottles and maybe grab a Clif Bar or two; otherwise I'll be riding. Don't expect to cramp this year. Since I started taking Magnesium and Potassium vitamin supplements every morning in the late winter/early spring, I haven't cramped even once. I think I found the "cure" to my curse.

Hey Loren, maybe different style of shoes. I had the same thing with my old "all leather" black shoes. My new ones have mesh that allows for some ventilation. Heat hasn't been an issue yet - Most Mavic shoes have this mesh..

I think I might drive down and pirate the route, it is one of my favorite areas to ride. I am kind of bummed the route skips a ton of great climbs in SB.

The issue wasn't taking the lane, it was swerving into the lane in front of the only car in the area - a police car. The offenders admitted guilt and apologized.
