Clipless Pedals

Someone gave me an old Trek 1200 with Shimano clipless pedals and shoes with cleats. The shoes are too big for me and the pedals are old. Does anyone know if they are universal and I can just replace the shoes, or do I have to replace both?

Thanks.

are the cleats 2 bolt or three?

You can replace the shoes, the cleats or the cleats & pedals at your discretion.
