Congratulations! That is quite an accomplishment. I'm planning a ride up Haleakala on Maui next month and you're making me feel like a slacker! Haleakala is only 36 miles and 10,023 feet from the beach to the summit, with no dirt section.

I about fell out of my chair laughing when I read this part - nice write up & thanks for sharing.

Climbing Haleakala will be great. Make sure to fill up with water and food at the last store on the way up. Smooth ride and a nice descent. Have a great time.

Thanks I can't wait. I've been studying the chainreaction.com page and the training is going well. I rode from Encanto Park (elev. 600') to Dawson Saddle (elev. 7901') on Sunday with a stop at Crystal Lake on the return (74.4 miles, 8740' of climbing). I'm in Maui for a week, so I have 6 opportunities to give it a go, so hopefully the weather will cooperate for at least one of those days.

I'm sort of picky about what I eat and drink on rides, so I've been training with a camelbak and plan to use one on the ride. Every write-up I've read recommends full finger gloves, arm warmers and a jacket for the descent, so it makes sense to use one anyway.

Guess I missed this one the first time around. Great writeup and photos. Riding all that way just to have to tackle a steep dirt road has gotta be rough.

I keep telling my wife this is the leverage she has to get me to do a family vacation in Hawaii (pre-cycling, I didn't really feel the need to go back after our first visit). Hopefully she's listening.

Wow, what an effort. I was just in Kona and rented a bike for two days. Got in three rides. I had aspirations of climbing Koloko? I think it was; but just climbing Hina Lani wasted me. That was only about 1400 feet in 3.4 miles with some small flat sections.
Seems everything there except Quen K involved a lot of climbing.

Mauna Kea is on a total other level than Haleakala. Kudos to you sir!

On the Big Island, you are either going up/down or around. Not much straight and flat, but lots of nice roads for riding.
