I went from Long Beach on the L.A. river trail and the sign said to do a 180 turn onto Imperial to get on the west side of the river trail. Otherwise if I kept going straight it would become the Rio Hondo trail.

So I made the turn and took the L.A. river trail till I reached and end sign at Atlantic Blvd. I crossed Atlantic and turned left onto District Blvd and took that for a while till Downey Blvd and crossed that. Then District Blvd became Leonis Blvd. The road got more narrow and I turned around and came back to Long Beach where I parked my SUV near the Seal Beach Yacht Club (Studebaker Road and PCH).

How does a rider get onto the L.A. river way up to the Griffith Park area from where I stopped?

The LA River Ride does the route you're interested in but I can't find any sort of route on their website... somebody probably has it out there somewhere.

I went on the Strava and then later, got onto Google Earth separately.

From where the L.A. River stopped (going north) at Atlantic Blvd to where it picks up again is approximately 7.5 miles of the L.A. river that does not have a bike trail. It picks up at Egret Park which is where the I-5 (Golden State fwy) and the 110 fwy meet. That would be just east of Dodger Stadium on your left and a Metrolink station on your right. From the looks of it on Google Earth, that 7.5 miles has a lot of railroad tracks, maybe most of it isn't being used.

Even if I pick it up at Egret Park, it doesn't last that long. I then traced on Google Earth the miles from Egret Park and it takes me approximately 7 miles till I cross the Ventura Fwy 134 and it seems to end at Riverside Drive. At that point it looks like a dirt road.

Yeah, looking at that strava link it looks like they get off at Atlantic also and don't get back on again. Looks like you'll have to go on side streets.

The last time I did the River Ride, we exited the trail at Fletcher and took streets to the park in Maywood, where we got back on the trail. There may be a new section of trail past Fletcher; I've skipped the River Ride the last couple of years.

Garfield Cat is correct. Egret park is the new end of the upper section of the LARIO path. That is basically where San Fernando Road meets Ave 26, near the LA River Center, and just east of Dodger Stadium. There is supposed to be a few more miles of park added in Glendale north of Griffith Park, but I am not sure when that will open, or if the bike path will continue there.

The river ride's path is fairly circuitous through Boyle Heights, Chinatown and then into Lincoln Heights/Cypress Park so it may be possible to find a quicker way.

The LA River starts at Riverside Dr. and ends on Egret Park,it looks like they working on connecting the path, it may take a long timebefore it happens.
