GMR Clyde & Athena Ride Report

Hoping all post reports here for easy access. I will post pics for now but can't post my video till tomorrow eve since I have to head out to a beach party.

AHultin's wife drove the support vehicle. I tried to snap a shot but AHultin was too fast for the lens!

Photo Joe, one of those guys that can hit the same pose every time ( 2 different pics)

TrojanHorse, Nusince, PhotoJoe, and JSigone

Tin Robot on front. BeachGrad05 much better descent today. Hanging with the crowd in rougher DH conditions than last time (camera on head)

I tell you what, descending GMR KNOWING that there are no cars is a blissful way to go. I was kind of coasting until it hit me. I think I added 2 mph to my previous best because I could use both sides of the road. Good times!

Don't use both sides of the road! I almost had some jack*** hit me a few times ago on GMR because he was being an idiot taking his corners too fast. When he saw me he nearly bit it trying to correct. It woulda been a long way down.

Anyway, was GMR closed to vehicles today or something?

EDIT: sure enough, closed all weekend! http://dpw.lacounty.gov/roadclosures/

+100....yeah, closed to traffic. We had no idea and I would think all weekend.

I rode down Mt. Baldy Rd. because riding alone, on a mountain road closed to traffic due to high fire danger, did not seem safe.

Bombing down Mt. Baldy Rd. at high speed and with cars and motor bikes zooming right by me posed other hazards; but at least I was closer to "civilization" in case of an emergency.

If next time everyone makes it to the Village then we definitely need to go up to the ski lift and return together via GMR.

But first, the Alpaca-PCH Adventure!

It really was a good day. It didn't feel as hot as that last time, at least not on the way up, and not in the shade. On the descent you could really feel the heat. It came in waves.

A few videos raw and unedited. I love my little camera, but it isn't very good at capturing audio, so forgive me for the sound.

Here we are before the start. I tried to get a glimpse of everyone before we began.

A quick stop to rest, er... uhm, enjoy the scenery and take some pictures.

This one is for Shawn, it was a tough ride up but we made it. I hope you like this video of you arriving at the shack, it's my way of saying thank you for the beer! I have to admit, it was the first 2 of many more I had later. I was drowning my sorrows, I'm not usually a Hawaii fan, but yesterday I was...I kid, I kid

All in all it was a great ride with parts that sucked. It was great that the road was closed so we pretty much had it to ourselves. Saw other cyclist, but not too many. Not as many as last time, and no where near as many that were up there on the 4th of July, the last weekend it was closed. It also sucked that the road was closed, no SAG, no water refills at the shack. Thank you so very much to the Hultin family. You guys are awesome, cold water and some of the most beautiful yellow bananas I have ever seen in my life, or maybe I was just hungry. Thank you for the support!

I would have loved to made it to Baldy. My plan was to ride to the village, back GRR and GMR then meet my wife at my in-laws in Duarte to watch USC game. That would have put me at just over 60 miles for the day. Well since my ride time was pretty much cut in half there was no need to meet my wife out there.

It was great riding with you all. Some of you again, and some of you for the first time. Only Commute Commando was missing from our first group or riders, but he has a doctors excuse, so he can be forgiven. I wonder how many more new people will ride with us next time?

No, I'm not crazy - I only did it on corners that I could see all the way through, so I was on my side of the road for blind corners. I had the same vision of biting it in case of over correction!

Guess we can see why they closed the roads.....East Fork has a fire right now that I can see all the way from my office window here in Orange County.

Peak of mount baldy seems like its in the smoke plume.

See my post (#6). The risk of fire is exactly the reason why I rode down Mt. Baldy Rd. and down to Claremont. The risk of getting caught, alone, on GMR when a brush fire starts is something that I didn't want to possibly face.

I saw news of the fire today. Is the reservoir area that they mentioned in the newscast the same reservoir depicted on several of your photos?

Yeah it is. If you remember the reservoir that you could see off to your left as we were climbing GMR that is the area that is burning right now. In fact if you recall the fork in the road just past the shack, well if you continued down that fork you would run right into the fire line.

Wow, that's a little scary - I'd hate to get inadvertently caught in a fire like that. I wonder why they don't post any signs at any of the closed gates? We just assumed it was closed for the holiday weekend, not because of any danger.

From everything I've gathered, it looks like it was closed Sat for safety, not an actual fire, not too sure on that though. The fire that is burning right now started Sunday at around 2:30.

You are right. The LA County website stated that the road was closed Saturday for safety reasons, including potential fire danger.
