There has been a lot of information on this site as well. If the fire is knocked down or contained you think they will open GMR up to traffic or maybe just bikes by the weekend?

Also don't forget that once they contain this fire it is going to smoke and smolder for a long, long time meaning that even when they do open the roads back up the air in the area will still be really unhealthful, especially to people with asthma or sinus sensitivities.

I don't think the fire was actually near GMR, though. Pretty sure it stayed on the other side of the river. I wouldn't be surprised if GMR opened within a week of the fire being brought down.

Wildwinds I agree, this is no station fire and GMR has far less people, especially since most of the wind blows north.

Seeing that they are not calling for full containment until Thursday the 13th, and you add another week to that, your guess might be close. The only thing is that the powers that be use any and all excuses they can to keep that road closed. I drove up to the gate this morning (Thursday the 6th) and it was closed, but there was no one posted to keep hikers and bicyclist out, and there were no signs, not even the electric one over the road was on.

I read they are letting people back in to get their stuff at the campgrounds. And maybe the home owners?

As of yesterday, the fire is now 83% contained and no visible flames were spotted Saturday night.

Any word when the road might open? There is a social training ride for the Tour de Foothills this Saturday that was supposed to go up it but if it is closed the ride will go to Plan B.

Considering that according to the map linked earlier in the thread, the fire burned north of East Fork Road, I think riding GMR/GRR to the village will be fine. I doubt you would see any men or material in that area since it is so far from the fire line. I will be riding there on Sunday, if Hwy. 39 is still closed. 39 is how they are getting men and material to the fire, so I would not try poaching a ride on that road if it is still closed.

I decided to take advantage of the nice weather and took off a little early from work today to go for a ride. On a whim I decided to ride up 39 and there is still a hard closure at Old San Gabriel Canyon Rd. I had a nice conversation with the CHP officer stationed there and he told me that from his understanding the hard closure on 39 was expected to be lifted most likely on Thursday as long as the incident commander felt it was safe to do so. There is also a CHP officer stationed at Glendora Ridge Road in Baldy Village. He also mentioned that the fire department has East Fork Road closed which makes sense since that is where the fire line is.
When I asked about GMR he mentioned that it was still closed however he was not aware of any officers being assigned to that closure. So hearing that I decided to ride across Sierra Madre and up GMR. Low and behold the gate is still closed however there is no one there to stop cyclists from stepping over the gate like any other time GMR is closed to vehicular traffic. So I hopped over the gate and pressed on up for a bit. I finally turned around about a mile past the gate since I was not planning on being out late so I did not have lights with me but as of now you can climb GMR at least to the shack.

Anyone know the current status of GMR and GRR? I know there's a OC Rebels GMR ride scheduled for Sunday morning. Just wondering if that will really happen....

Hwy. 39 is open as of 6:50 am this morning.
GMR gate in Glendora still locked as of 6:40 am this morning.
Looks like I'm riding Encanto Park to Dawson Saddle on Sunday morning. Anybody interested?

That is weird, maybe it is because they can not close the back side of GMR?
Guess I wont be up there for 2 weeks. This week is a Tour de Foothill training ride and the rest of the time I am busy...hiking Mt Langley, Rotary car show. See it on the 30th!

8am? Y'all are nuts to start that late in this heat. Sunrise is at about 6:30am and there is enough light to ride before then. I'll be heading up Azusa Canyon by 6:15 am to get some altitude before it really gets hot.

The heat isn't that bad. Besides, you're out there on the mountain partially because its tough right? The temps just add a little to the challenge.
Anyway I'm gonna try and go out there tomorrow maybe around 11am. Holler if ya see me!

Somebody post a report tomorrow please... I'm still deciding if I want to do the hills of Whittier or GMR on Sunday.
