Gatorade Guy on SGRT

I've never noticed him before (the one other time I rode that far up SGRT, ha ha) but I stopped today to check it out. There were tons of cyclists there doing lord only knows what. One guy was pumping up his tires, another looked like he was getting some on the spot service from Gatorade Guy (GG) and I refilled one of my partially drained water bottles.

SO Gatorade Guy says to me "I have ice cold gatorade if you'd like"

Me: (REALLY, really regretting forgetting cash this morning) "Sorry, I forgot to bring money with me this trip"

GG: "It's ok, i give you credit"

I didn't take advantage because I don't get up there that often but how swell is that?

The weekend snack vendor at Yorba Linda park on the SART has tons of different drinks and snacks, and he hooked me up one day when I had no cash on me too. I looked like death after an especially long day on the MTB in the mountains of OC. I went back the next weekend to pay him back, and bought a few more items. Seemed like a nice little father/daughter operation.

BG - right here by that teal roofed hut: https://maps.google.com/?ll=34.11215...01032&t=h&z=21

No, there was no question, I just thought it was nice that he'd offer a dirty sweaty stranger free goods in the hope that I'd pay him back. Kind of restores my faith in humanity when stuff like that happens.

I would have absolutely bought something from him too, my bottles were both warm and blech - warm gatorade. Ironically, I over froze my camelbak (de rigeur for me lately it seems) and I added water to it at the base of GMR and THAT water stayed cold for my entire ride (6+ hours)

Totally agree. It's the little things man, it adds up.

Just one of the cool things you see if you ride your bike!

Is this the Chicano dude pulling a Burley type trailer? He was out there about 5 years ago on the day of a forum ride. It was blazing hot and no water in sight. Hadn't installed the water fountains near the damn dam. Ice cold G-ade for a buck!

Yes, that's the man. I wish I'd have had one lousy greenback too!

Heck he could have sold me an ice cube for a buck yesterday.

That is how I felt on Friday...I didn't have cash on me either. Thinking I need to be keeping some 1$ bills in my seat bag "just in case"....

I always have a $5 in my saddle bag just incase for anything that I may need it for.
Nice to have someone like that around.

The guy's name is either omar or oscar. I forgot but he is pretty much there almost everyday. Sells the gatorades for 2 bucks now or whatever you wave at him lol I am one of those cyclists who congregates there with the other cyclists, we just chill for a bit and chat before heading our way either to seal beach or up azusa. It's interesting getting to know ppl and where are they coming from to ride on the sgrt.

Damn, you live in the SF valley and ride the SGRT? How does one even make it out to this area by bike?

When I lived in Sylmar, I would bike to the North Hollywood Red Line station, Take that to 7th Street and catch the Blue Line to 103rd st (not too scary in the daylight). From there take the Green Line to Norwalk the pedal 1/2 mile to SGRT.

SFV is a bit of an armpit when it comes to everyth...er...cycling, however around the valley rim (in almost every direction) there's nice places. If I lived there I'd be driving somewhere to ride.

Gotta agree here. The middle of my armpit is hot, sweaty, and stinks.

Regarding the Gatorade dude. First time I saw him I said "Hey Bud!" He offered me a beer.

There are tons of great rides all over the LA basin. Why should he just do one close to his house?

I guess that's where I'm spoiled. Ride down my driveway and have the Rio Hondo trail 1 block away. Ride 1 mile and have SGRT to head either north or south for miles and miles of riding.
