You guys got a tail wind back to the start? Would you believe we actually had a significant headwind from Pt. Mugu to Malibu? Rare enough, but after midnight ... super rare ... definitely a first for me.

I spent most of the day trying to hang on to a pretty fast group of riders and I don't think you were any more than a half an hour behind us. Good job!

^Keith right? Nice riding with you all. I rode a lot of the route after the Grimes Canyon alone as I did the last segment as well. That headwind towards Santa Paula sucked riding alone. I am surprised I did not pass one person nor did they pass me on the Ojai Highway climb.

Definitely, just waiting for White Mountain Double to open up (I hope I am ready). The time of year and the heat kind of scare me (September and Death Valley).

One more for the 1000 mile club! White Mountain Double registration is open and the cheapest rate for registration ends today. Anyone have any experience with this ride? It is for the weekend of September 13 and rides through part of Death Valley (sort of) at the peak of the day? Morning and evening in Bishop should be cool.

I've only ridden it once but on that year (2010 I think) I considered it to be a fairly brutal double. Not the climbing so much, though there was that, but fighting a brutal headwind for the last 60 miles . . . not fun. I was trading pulls with Chuck Bramwell, so thankfully wasn't out there fighting it all by myself, but still, it took a lot (in a digging deep kind of way) to finish that one.

YMMV, of course, and probably will depending on the weather. My friend Stefan rode it last year and considered it easier than Knoxville whereas I thought it was far more difficult than Knoxville. There is lots of desert, so if you are not a desert person it could be mentally difficult from that aspect.

As an aside (probably meaningless) keep in mind that White Mountain Double and Weapons of Mass Destruction both have the same initials.

I found an I-Pod helpful for keeping my sanity on the long desolate desert stretches, esp. in Nevada.

I like the desert but that is some baron land, is there much traffic? I would bring the MP3 but I prefer to hear what's around me. I was actually kind of concerned with the heat?

No, almost no traffic. An occasional vehicle, but big picture . . . very light to zero traffic. Bring your MP3 . . . there is nothing else to hear around you (except maybe the wind).

Heat is quite likely, yes. I used a 7 oz. Camelback and two large Polar bottles and had no problem staying hydrated.

OK, I have started out carrying 4 bottles on the doubles I have done this year but found I only need 2-3 between stops depending on the weather. I will bring 4 again and make sure they are full after the bristle cone forest. MP3, maybe probably bring it not sure if I will listen, never have, might feel strange. Thanks.

I did it last year. My thoughts?

Like a mini-508. Great training for that.
Climbs up alluvial fans and long, windy desert flats.
    Almost no traffic.
LONG climb up to White Mountain, but beautiful. Some parts of it are steep (13%), but it's terraced, so that's OK. Great views.
You get to have lunch ... in the Boonies. Literally.

Awesome smoothie rest stop stop. Trust me.
LONG climb up to Montgomery Pass. Not steep at all, but can be debilitating if it's hot.
A long gradual descent from there to Bishop. Sounds good, right? Except there is typically a stiff headwind. Oy.

Of course, I forgot to sign up early, but I expect to be there. I'll probably be staying at our condo in Mammoth (~40 miles away from Bishop) ... if you want to , come stay with us.

I got a room already at the Rodeway Inn for Friday and Saturday night. I would like to try and avoid any deer, if you know what I mean. It has one king bed but I am willing to share.

Lol ... with any luck, migration season is over. Then again, by then it may be starting again!

The latest on the deer strike? The car was repaired, but the upper radiator hose was too close to the secondary fan, and occasionally, there was contact. Driving down to the dealer to get them to move the hose (I would, but it's a closed system and difficult to purge) the hose burst. Pulled into the dealer in a cloud of vaporized coolant.

Oy. Good thing I use the bike to get to work.

OK, White Mountain Double is only 3 weeks away from this coming Saturday giving me only 3 weekends to prepare. I was checking NOAA and the temperature at the top is in the mid to low 60's. What should I be expecting when I do the ride, high 50's? Given that is 10,000ft what about the Desert portion of the ride, what will be the high? In the past what has everyone warn through the 200 miles do you shed layers?

In addition to the shorts and jersey I just added a light jacket and knee warmers at the start. Took them off at the first checkpoint, rode all day in the heat, then put them back on for the ride from the final checkpoint (Benton) into Bishop (which took an eternity due to the brutal headwind . . . which did not ease up at sundown).

OK, sounds like arm and leg warmers and a vest will do just fine. I did that on Solvang and with the a food my pockets were stuffed but I think I have learned what food to take and eat now. What about full fingered gloves?

I keep hearing tales of tail-winds into Bishop from Benton but with the exception of the frozen-re-routed Eastern Sierra I've never experienced that. That was the year we fought the headwind all the way from Bishop to Benton before being allowed to enjoy the reverse. Oy is correct.

I almost swore off doing any more doubles after ESD ... except it didn't hold. I'm registered for White Mountain Double now.
