No question that the WMD is tougher than the ESD. It's not so much the climb up to White Mountain (although that is a tough and epic climb) ... it's the long windy desert sections, and then the long gradual climb you make after that smoothie stop. That road seems to go on for miles! And once you summit Montgomery Pass, you're generally facing a headwind all the way from Benton to Bishop.

It is an epic ride, though. Congrats on the Triple Crown!

So you have the triple crown (I do to but I am thinking to pass for the jersey till next year to get the 1000 mile club) and you have Death Valley coming up, that would make four. Are you also going to do the dead of winter double to get 5?

More centuries would probably make it more comfortable to stay in the saddle all day. I don't know if they would help with performance. I think I mainly need to work on flatland riding, on aero bars and in pacelines.

I did not do any long rides with lots of climbing recently (the most climbing in one day I had between the ESD and the WMD was ~4600') but I did full Palomar (4300') twice in the last 1.5 months, my cadence there drops into the 70's through the top half, that may have helped. My legs were in better condition than I expected by the end of the White Mountain climb.

I have not heard from dead of winter guys again. Last I heard, I was on the wait list but they said chances were good that I'd get in.

Just read in the LD forum that there was significant flood damage to roads in Death Valley in the last few months. Lots of backcountry roads are closed. Fortunately, it seems that all roads needed by the Fall Double are open, if in less than ideal conditions. Now all we need is for the government to open for business again (it's doubtful that the ride can still be held if the park is closed 4 weeks from now).

Things are much worse for Furnace Creek 508 guys, not only do they have [strike]less than 2 weeks[/strike] 4 days to the event, but Badwater Road from Badwater to the south entrance is still damaged, and will not be open to traffic even if the Congress gets its act together. The "shortcut" from Ridgecrest to 190 is also closed. At this point the only two ways to get to DV from SoCal are 395 to 190 via Olancha and 15 to 127 to 190 via Baker.

Yup, I've been closely following the 508 situation to see how it might affect our double in 3.5 weeks. The park roads will all be open, and I believe furnace creek itself would be operating as usual, so it's just down to the permits Chris has to hold his event in the park. Logistically I think there are no problems, but legally he probably can't hold the event? I dunno.

Furnace Creek 508 is rerouted because it can be rerouted. We stay in the national park almost the entire distance (except for maybe 40-50 miles in Nevada). If the park does not reopen in a month, they'll have to cancel.
@jmX if you can do a sub 5 hour century nonstop, you're probably fine.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It'll be my fifth double for the year, and I'm not making any alternate plans (Bass Lake, Solvang). I admit I haven't read the rider contract for the Death Valley rides closely; is he even on the hook to reschedule/refund if the NPS disallows the ride? The NPS isn't going to provide any guidance (if they're even going to answer the phone now) to when the park will re-open, so I wonder if/when he'd announce change of plans. With no alternate plans, I guess I'd even be willing to do an out-and-back on 95 or 395 for the checkmark.

I'd overheard 200miler during the Knoxville staff ride speculating some of the (currently damaged) roads might not be repaired until next year. If the road through Badwater is closed that would impact the spring route, so maybe it'd turn into the fall ride. I certainly wouldn't want to ride over Towne Pass as an alternative though.

It looks like almost all the roads for the fall double in death valley are still open. Scottys Castle rd, Daylight pass, and the 190 are open, but the road out to the crater is probably barricaded off. Furnace creek is on private property, so the food/lodging is all still going to be open. Do you know if there was any storm damage to those 3 roads? Scotty's castle rd had a couple miles under mud, but it was still passable.

So, in the highly unlikely case the shutdown is still in effect in 3 weeks I'll still be going on there and will just bring a camelbak and do a shorter ride myself.

Also, I doubt the adventure corps ride contract says they have to refund...that's almost unheard of from what I understand.

Check your email re: Death Valley Fall. I'm happy to see Chris/AdventureCORPS sent something out now about the potential for a new course. I wonder if he'll refund the portion of the entry fee that the NPS charges him for rider's entry to the park (I have a yearly pass, so I've always been annoyed by that).

I've booked a room at the Best Western in Pahrump, ~30mi from the starting point of the potential new route. I hope it doesn't come to that, since it was so convenient to stay next to the starting line (in my case camping).

What is the change in route, maybe I have time to get back into shape. I initially veered away from that route because of the climb at mile 190. Maybe with the reroute people might back out?

The proposed reroute is a loop from Death Valley Junction to Pahrump to Shoshone (100 miles) clockwise and then counterclockwise.

I tried to sketch it in ridewithgps and I got 6300' of climbing, and it's probably even less than that. There are no significant hills and only one spot where it gets steeper than 6%.

If RWGPS is saying 6300, it's probably way less. With such little climbing I was almost considering riding my Shiv for the double, but I bet it fairs poorly over all that chipseal in Nevada.

I don't really wanna ride loops around pahrump, but it sounds ok as the backup plan. Glad it's not just cancelled.

You're only in Nevada for 50 miles or so. But I'm not sure if it's a good thing. In Street View, pavement looks nicer in Nevada than in California.

If I add up all climbs directly, I get 4900'.

It's all probably moot anyway. I expect things to resolve themselves in some way around the 17th if not sooner. There are some pretty serious business interests at stake and they are going to hold enough Republican feet to the fire at least to ensure that the debt ceiling is raised on time. And if Republicans cave in on that, they'll cave in on the budget. We already have conservative organizations like U.S. Chamber of Commerce issuing press releases along the lines that "we understand that you want reforms, but debt ceiling must be raised and it's non-negotiable". Either establishment Republicans will extract enough concessions to pass the budget and save face by the 17th, or they'll pass temporary extensions. In either case, the park should be open on the 26th.

Okay, Bass Lake done, that's my five doubles for 2013 (Hemet, Eastern Sierra, Grand Tour, Knoxville and Bass Lake) plus one volunteer at Joshua Tree, so CTC Gold Thousand Mile club for another year.

See you all next Double Season, maybe even Camino Real this year.

They said it'd be in Death Valley unless the govt was closed, so now I presume it'll be on the original course. Chris Kostman drove into furnace creek today and visited the park according to his facebook update a few hours ago, so that's also a good sign.

Thanks. I'll have to watch Facebook. I still had the Twitter name in my phone from something in the past so checked there, and didn't see any updates since the 9th announcing the possible change.
