What to you guys do for sunglasses? I wear bifocals so I guess custom order sunglasses are in order. Give me a clue where to start looking.

I'm looking at RX lenses for my Oakley flack jackets. A Google search brought up adssportseyewear.com that had the lenses for 179.99 Haven't ordered yet so not sure of the quality. If I decide to go this route I'll post my results.

First thing I tried was prescription bifocal sunglasses. I did not care for them. To read the dash/radio in my car, I was always dropping my chin. It also affected my vision of the ground under my front wheel while riding. Next up was single-vision prescription sunglasses with just my distance prescription. Anytime I need to read something I just push them up out of the way; I'm stopped anyway. I still use them about 30% of the time. Finally, I went back to contact lenses after 15 years of only glasses. I have the daily disposables. I wear them while I ride and during other outdoor activities; usually that means most weekends. Now I can wear any pair of sunglasses, especially those that wrap around and offer side protection from pebbles and other road debris. Problem solved.

I wear contacts so I just wear regular sunglasses over them. I JUST ordered a set of multi-focal contacts... apparently the center has your distance prescription and the edges have your reading prescription. My eye doc loves them but obviously I haven't had a chance to try them.

My bifocals are light sensitive so they darken in sunlight, but I hate hate HATE wearing them for riding. They just don't stay put well enough and they let in a ton of light around the top and edges.

I should probably mention that I usually only need the bifocal part in low light for small print, so when I'm riding I don't really care. I can read my garmin OK without them.

I bought prescription multifocals that were supposed to darken automatically but they are pathetic as sun-protection - don't bother.

I have a pair of Maui Jim's that are Polaroid and Bi-focals. Bought them at Bass Pro Shops in R.C. They come in grey or bronze. They are super lightweight and stylish to boot.

I received those as a gift a year ago also purchased at BPS in RC. Great for reading and as sunglasses but no distance prescription.

It's sounds like the multifocal contacts that TrojanHorse mentioned is something I need to look into. It's either that or some extremely expensive custom sunglasses that are bifocal. I'm a recreational salt water fisherman and use Costa del Mar sunglasses out on the water. They make great sunglasses and also they will do prescription sunglasses (including bifocals) using their lenses. Let's just say, they probably cost as much as a decent Trek

I guy I ride with occasionally has prescription lenses for his Oakley M-Frames. Oakley is down in Lake Forest, so he just goes directly to them with his prescription. It's not cheap, but he figures that going directly to Oakley avoids a service fee which would be paid for indirect access to Oakley. He believes others that advertise similar lenses for Oakley frames are going to Oakley for them.

I have to say, they do a beautiful job. They look like regular Oakleys, until you get close enough to see the prescription lenses inset into the regular Oakley lenses. BTW, I favor Radar's and M-Frames (no longer made) and other designs that keep the lenses off your face. They tend to fog much less in cool weather, and the lenses stay cleaner, as they are not contacting your face at any point.

Unlike others, I am happy with my bifocal Transition lenses. They get dark enough for me.

I measured the distance from my eyes to my car's instrument panel, and the Dr set the close-up portion of the lenses for that distance. It is also a good distance for the cyclometer on my bike.

Comes out to be about $150-250 depending on what lenses/coatings you choose and what sale is going on. They are solid frames with solid lenses. RX oakleys and rudy projects were at least $300+

Thanks again to everyone. Sometime this week I'm going to check into the multi focal contacts that TrojanHorse has mentioned. Perhaps those plus sunglasses over them will be a good option.

I don't know how you guys wear contacs while riding. The few times I"ve tried, two things happen (1) sweat would get in my eye and irritate the heck out of them. That's when I started using a bandana over my head. Helped the problem some, but then (2) any wind would cause them to move around and once even fold inside my eye. My Oakley jawbones offer about as much coverage as you can get from sunglasses so I must have been doing something wrong.
I only use my contacts or glasses to read and to drive in the dark as I could see a bit crisper, but I hate that I have to remember to take them off before my commute home.

Well, Genaro... I will say that if I am sweating buckets (say, a hot day up GMR) and wipe it into my eyes, it's going to sting. On average, sweat doesn't run into my eyes though, I guess I have the right size eyebrows for the job. Maybe look into one of those Halo bands or head gutrs or whatever they're called. I wear contacts 24x7 all day every day and swap 'em out monthly.

I've been wearing bifocal sunglasses for years. Just my regular prescription with polarized, darkened lens. Hated the progressives when I tried those.

I use perscription sunglasses without bifocal and that works fine. I can read the # on my computer and distance is great. Spent the extra $ for polaroid this time. That really makes a difference

OK, I just stuck my multi-focal lenses in... and I'm not feeling it. I'll report back in a few days after I have a chance to get used to them but they don't appear to do what i need them to do.

Technical info for the curious. My prescription (I'm nearsighted) is -2.50 in the right eye and -2.25 in the left eye. I wear reading glasses OVER my contacts to read. if I take my contacts out, i can read just fine with nothing. The contacts I'm wearing right now are -2.50 in both eyes and there's some verbiage about +2.50 max, so I presume they vary as you "look" closer to the edge of the lens. I have a follow up next week with the eye doc, maybe I can figure this thing out.
