My new (old) bike

I got this Schwinn Peloton a few months ago. It was basically ridden two or three times and put away in storage for the last 25 years or so. It had the original wheels, tires, pedals, bar tape etc when I bought it. Here she is:

Wow, that is CLEAN! :thumb:

Mark said it appeared to him it hadn't been ridden. The original tubulars were on the bike when I got it and I didn't want to deal with tubulars so I had him build new wheels for me.

Mr. Beanz 03-11-13 08:44 PM

Oh that's the bike Mark worked over for you? Looks good! :thumb:

Are those Velocity Fusion rims?

Nice! Is that a white selle san marco rolls on that bike?

Don't let CalamariChris anywhere near it, he seems to have an affection for classic white bikes. :)

Yes and the saddle is practically new.

Luckily it's a 23" frame.........too small for Chris :)

Beautiful, ride it and enjoy it. You're fortunate, but you probably should post more pics.

calamarichris 03-11-13 11:59 PM

Gratulations on the lucky find!
That's an '86 Peloton, which is just about one of the sweetest bikes ever made.
I've got a 25-inch and a 24-inch in my living room, and my Sweetheart is currently building up one of her own. We've got everything except the brifters.
FYI: that rear triangle is actually black chrome, not painted. And if you ever chip the paint, the frame is chromed underneath. I had one (a 23-incher like yours) back in '86-'87 as a triathlete and USCF junior crit-crasher. I had ugly beef-jerky scabs from hip-to-ankle through most of my junior & senior years in highschool, but that frame was never knocked the least bit askew--it's a bloody Sherman tank that makes modern carbon frames look like paper mache.
Many safe & happy miles to you and the new beauty!

See? I told you - he's clearly collecting one of every size. Keep away! :D

Haha, no. I just gave away a 23-incher last year to a BFer up in San Bernardino. It was my trusty original Peloton that I'd had repainted at Cyclart. (After more than 3 years of searching Ebay & CL, I'd given up hope of ever seeing one; then they screwed up the font and mysteriously http://www.calamarichris.com/smiley/blink.gifstripped off the black chrome and painted the rear triangle black without asking firsthttp://www.calamarichris.com/smiley/blink.gif?
Built up with 7850 C24 wheels, carbon bars, 7800 group, my 25-incher still weighed only 20.05 pounds on the shop scale. Might've even gotten below 20 if I'd taken off the cages and Garmin.

Seeing your pics on my larger work monitor, that is one cherry, cherry bike, Vic! Good score. :thumb:

Chris, I was torn as to what to do with the bike. Everything was like new so I didn't know if it would be best to keep it as original as possible or change things up with new hubs/wheels and modern drivetrain. In the end all we did was new wheels using the original hubs. All else is as original.

Does this pic look familiar?

I believe you posted it in the Schwinn thread several months ago.

calamarichris 03-12-13 11:28 AM

I was thinking the same thing while looking through your pics. I'm about as fanatical about Dura Ace 7800 as everyone else was about Lance about 5 years ago, so I would have been torn about changing anything on such a cherry example. Fortunately, all mine were offered solely as frames, even needing spa days at Cyclart.
If you do change anything, don't let the C&V guys find out. Haha.

That wasn't a pic I posted, but I never get tired of looking at Pelotons, even the red 84 & 85 models look great to me.

I always thought anheuser-busch should use that beer marketing campaign for bush beer. :innocent:

Tuna, about the only thing I'd change on that bike (assuming the drive train works well) is the bar tape. The wheels look good too. However, if it's your ONLY bike, upgrading to a modern group set can make your experience a lot more enjoyable overall.

Beautiful, very nice! I've been keeping my eyes open on CL and checking out yard sales for a vintage steel bike.

iamtim 03-12-13 03:19 PM

Damn, that's a nice bike. :)

tunavic 03-12-13 03:23 PM

TH, I have several bikes now including the BMC (do you recall, yes it's here already) and a couple of others.

When I picked up the bike the original wheels and tubulars were on it (no air of course). I squeezed the tubular and it just sort of turned to dust and not wanting to deal with tubulars, they were replaced with the wheels you see there now (Velocity fusion). The bike has had a complete overhaul and the cables were changed (not the housings, they are original) and SPD-SL pedals were put on. That's all we did. Everything is working fine but I don't intend to ride it often.

I blame Chris for this newest one (Peloton). Seeing all the photos of his Pelotons gave me "P envy"

SWEET find!!!

alicestrong 03-14-13 01:10 PM

Beautiful bike...wow!

Mr. Beanz 03-14-13 01:27 PM

Gina also has a steel bike she rode for a few years. 86 steel Bianchi we bought from a coworker. He wanted $40 for it to use on a dept store mtb.

I gave him the $80 I had in my pocket. We put some money into it and it's a great bike. Even after going with a full carbon bike, Gina won't let it go!

I need to find me one someday. But those links above, $700 for an old bike?

Old steel bikes aren't old. They are: vintage, classic, show patina, well used, excellent everyday beater, good rider, brings back good memories, aren't made like this any more, aged well, etc, etc............just don't call them old :crash:

I've seen your wife's Bianchi the couple of times I rode the SART with you several years ago, Beanz, and I tell you... I'd much rather ride a classic Bianchi like that than any bike I've owned since I got back into cycling in '06. 80's Bianchis just... make me swoon.

(When I stopped cycling in... sometime in the late 80's I was riding a black Bianchi with celeste highlights. All Shimano 600 components, including Biopace chainrings which I still love to this day. Like a dumbass, I sold it to take my first wife on a date. I have never done anything I regret so much, and I'm not talking about dating my first wife. :D )
