old hwy 101 closed between san onofre and las pulgas (camp pendleton) through friday?

there's a couple of serious-looking guards at the ends of the old highway who are telling people to take i-5 until fri or sat. i don't know the details. it has something to do with some ships or something or other.

southbound, there's a hole in the fence and you can go under the railroad tracks and bushwack up to i-5. it looked kinda dubious to me. i was gonna ride back to san clemente metrolink and take the train, but a tourist gave me a pitying htfu look and said she was gonna climb up to i-5 so i went too.

Cr@p on a crust! Thanks for the heads-up. Lauretta and I are planning to ride up to Irvine from Cbad for a family thing on Saturday, but I'd better call the MP station this week and get the full p00p.

They do not only look serious they are. It is their land and it is not really even California. It is Camp Pendelton. Bushwhacking is not an option. When they close it you pedal on the 5 until they open it again

This land is our land*. Technically it is California. But yeah, they're serious, and I suspect there is a risk of getting run over by a large green, or desert tan vehicle that will nor be looking to "share the road".

*(appologies to Woodie Guthrie)

Bushwacking to i-5 is what the serious-looking guards suggested. We wouldn't know of the break in the fence or the tunnel under the tracks had they not pointed it out

They're probably doing an amphibious assault exercise.

Anyone have any press releases or links from the Pendleton MP's? Or any info hotlines?
I just left a voicemail with the MP desk sergeant (760-763-2072) but I don't expect them to call me back.
I'd sure hate to get kicked out onto the 5 on Saturday.

Is it closed from the end of the campground to Las Pulgas (just over 3 miles), or is the campground itself closed too?

it's closed from the end of the campground to las pulgas. i was there today and talked with a sentry who was there yesterday. i asked whether he thought the road would be closed saturday. he seemed fairly certain they would be done with whatever they are doing by friday.

Try range control. IIRC, they handle scheduling for everything on base. 725-3974, 725-4219, 725-3510. I haven't called them in a couple years and don't remember why I have 3 numbers for them.

Rode by on the Metrolink this afternoon, and there was a lot of activity on that Helipad that is between the state park and the tunnel. There was a semi flatbed parked on the access road, and I'm sure they were using the bike trail for access. The trucks are probably stocking a staging area for Vertreps to the LHA off the coast. (Helicopters hauling pallets to the ships off shore)
