You may give me some info of best place to rent a road bike and people to bike with.

I used to compete with bike, now I am do it only for leasure.

When I am home, Alps give me a very nice gym to play into, i bet there are wonderful places in SoCa also.

Southern California is a huge area so it would be nice where you plan on staying and what type of cycling you prefer to do. If for vacation, I would not especially want to stay in Los Angeles but instead maybe stay in the Central Coast area (Ventura to Monterey) or down in San Diego. Although not as beautiful as Europe there are nice places to ride... get out SLOBC.org, maybe Los Angeles Wheelman etc.

I would absolutely agree that some places in Cali are as beautiful as the Alps. The Sierras some to mind, the desert and the Pacific Ocean Coastline. While in Los Angeles, check out Velo Pasadena. They are the most knowledgeable and friendliest shop on the West Coast. You will find rides and riders of almost all range of capability.

Only bike shop I know that rents road-quality bikes is Helen's in Santa Monica. Look on their website for details. Lots of clubs meet in or around Santa Monica for rides up to Malibu on the weekends. Other clubs have morning training rides. VeloPasadena is a great shop and they may be able to help, if you're staying in downtown, Pasadena or close by.
