Seeking Strong Mechanic Recommendation in the Los Angeles or Orange County Area.

In the course of the past 2 years, the two very good mechanics at an OC LBS where I purchased one of my road bikes has left to move to Oregon, and another to open a clothing business to make more money, replaced by a really nice helpful guy that can't seem to dial in a derailleur properly and feels that all lubes are the same, go with the cheapest.

So, I am in search of a great mechanic. (This topic has been raised here before, but not very recently.)

I reside in the West LA area near Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Long Beach and ride primarily in Orange County in Irvine, Huntington Beach, and Newport. So anywhere in or near these cities is fine. I am always driving all over.

BUT--I am not just looking for anyone or a helpful suggestion--I am looking for the guy you would trust with your Dura-Ace Carbon. Someone who you have been with at the same shop for at least 3 years and has done some quality tune ups or repairs for you a few times. You know them, and their work enough to make a strong recommendation. Their work is perfect out the door every time. Someone who can break down and build up a bike and its second nature to them. If they are not a solo, it's the type of shop where the person you are recommending will actually do the work, and not pass it off to a helper.

I know this is a tough one--but I appreciate you taking the time.

I recommend Bob, the master tech at REI in Tustin (714-505-0205). First-class person and mechanic. Find out when he works, as he is off certain days of the week. Go see him, and ask that he alone should work your bike.

I have known him a long time, and first class work, done right the first time, always!
    Regards,

    Jed

Yeah, I've known Candy since he worked at the old Supergo/Performance in Fountain Valley, then Specialized. I ran into him at the grocery store the other day, and he told me he is now at Bike Religion. Yes, I can vouch for him too. An A+ human being and mechanic.

In Irvine - I know and trust Don Mock at A Road Bike 4 You. He is an excellent mechanic and is top notch wheel builder. I take my bike there regularly.
In Santa Monica - Bike Effect is probably the best shop on the westside.

Thanks to everyone thus far that took the time to suggest a mechanic. This is quite an endorsement list. I am going to have my work cut out selecting one. Some of the stores mentioned I have been in over the years shopping for bikes or accessories, but have not met the mechanics yet.

+1. Armando, the other mechanic at Ted's, is a good guy too. Both of these guys built up the new Giant bikes that Big Orange is now riding. If you prefer Redondo Beach, try Paul Che at Sprocket on PCH at Ave F. Paul built Rahsaan Bahati's Franco that he's been riding.

I second Bike Effect in Santa Monica. This is a high-end road bike shop, and Scott and the other mechanic there do excellent work.

Which thread or mechanic/shop are you referring to? There are so many discussed here.

ARoadBike4U has top Yelp ratings and has a popular no drop Sat AM ride group. They seem to have a strong reputation in Irvine and OC. A year and a half ago shopping for another road bike I stopped in to Aroadbike4u. They did spend time with me determining my size and trying to match me with a bike. My price point was 3k to 4k. But I did not get the best feeling there for a number of reasons. After they measured me, they placed me on a bike to test in the parking lot (56). It seemed a bit of a stretch to get to the bars and I was thinking maybe a smaller bike, one size down (54). They said that it would be better to take a larger bike and shorten the stem since shortening the stem is a common fit technique and they would have to do it to the 54 anyway based on their measurements. I asked them to just test a smaller bike first--one size down, before discussing stem changes--let me see what it's like. Then I was told that they don't have that model in my size in the shop--they sold the last one so they were trying to fit me on a larger one and make the changes needed to make it work. I asked them if they could get a smaller one? Is one coming in at any point and I can come back and try it out? They told me no--but that if I wanted to go on the internet and order and pay for it on their website, that they will accept delivery and put it together. I was not keen on purchasing a bike that I have not sized out yet. They told me that they would call me if they get one in a smaller size in and that was that. A week later I got a call and they located a used road bike a friend had in the smaller size (54) and he would meet me at the shop so I can try it out and decide if that size was right. So I met him--great guy--friend of the owner. He allowed me to test his bike. After I concluded that it's probably the geometry that was wrong for me because both sizes were not working well. So I asked if they had any other models in my size to try: 54, and they were out until the 2013 models started coming in. So I waited a month or so and stopped in again to see if anything new came in. But I was ignored for too long standing around and left. I purchased a bike elsewhere but I have been hesitant to stop there again even for repairs/tune-ups on one of my other bikes. It just did not feel right, and it could be my gut and the place could be fine. I may ride with them one Sat AM to see how other folks like it there.

I recommended Don at A Road Bike 4 U in a post above and since then I continue to go there for repairs. In my experience he does a great job and never gives me the upsell on parts or repairs. Prices are inline with what everyone else seems to charge. I haven't purchased a bike there - but I have been on a couple group rides and met some real nice people. They have another BMC promo coming up - good chance to demo their frames
