Yes, it was dangerous to ride in the sidewalk but I don't think it's illegal in LA...

From what I know taking the LAB (league of American Bicyclists traffic safety 101 course) you must WALK your bike when in a crosswalk.

I would have avoided the sidewalk, maybe in a nice clear area but DT sidewalks are insane! Stats say you are more likely to crash there. When i was first starting out i got lucky that my instinct to pedal faster has kicked in and i've never been hit. Not anymore though, i get on the brake lever and practice my stopping.

Was the "walk" sign on? Or was it just green? You're supposed to walk your bike across and hit the button, i would hit the button and go slow like a pedestrian (who the heck is going to climb off and on?) Nobody seemed to care.

Once i was approaching a major intersection and it was green, i was expecting to get left hooked so i slowed to a crawl and some guy turning still got mad, told me something but of course i didn't hear.
Pedestrians almost get hit in crosswalks all the time, so it's just a matter of time with a bike. I always check when i'm going for a walk/jog.

I would say you would get owned if you did get hit. It would be "riding on the sidewalk, no helmet" and anything else they get on you. And yes as the "Art of Cycling" says, better to be alive than "right"

I rarely ride on sidewalks. To ride safely on a sidewalk requires you to often slow to pedestrian speeds. While I ride for recreation, I also like to get where I am going, and speed is part of the fun. Sidewalks are no fun. If you try to have fun on them, they're dangerous.

I will ride on the sidewalks from time if I feel it is safer for that particular stretch of road. It has to be one of those risk asessments where the risk of riding on the sidewalk is less than on the road. I'm glad the OP posted this as we can all benefit from his experience. I had really never thought about the impact in the way that as cyclist you will be out to the middle of street alot faster than a pedestrian.


On a side note, when I ride with my two girls while towing one of them on a Burley I always ride on the sidewalk, but don't take any chances meaning wathcing those left hand turners like a hawk as well as the right turners.

Things actually start getting bad in Orange County north of the 55 Freeway. I once tried riding from the Anaheim Metrolink to Long Beach down Katella, about fifteen miles. Before I got half way I spotted a bus behind me, said screw it, raced it to the next stop and threw my bike on the rack next to the ubiquitous Wally.

When I feel that I "have" to ride the sidewalk, I do it with extreme caution. At driveways and intersections I slow down and look in all directions that cars and peds can come from, and am suspicious of any vehicle crossing my path.

Though riding on the sidewalk is generally a bad idea, I believe the legality of it is up to local governance. Here in El Cajon, I think it's illegal for an adult only in business districts. Violating this can get you shot in the face: http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/...-cajon-police/

I do climb Fletcher Parkway's sidewalk out of El Cajon for a mile on the way home, but it's in a park, uphill at 6-7% the whole way, with no cross traffic. So far, haven't been shot in the face.

The best of my understanding is that LAPD interprets the law to mean you must ride in the same direction on the sidewalk as traffic is flowing. So based on your drawing you would be doing that. It gets a little hazy, because I've had officers say that if you are moving faster than a pedestrian in the cross walk then you don't count as one, but if you were rolling slow you'd be fine. If he hit you, it'd probably depend on the officer that showed up on who he cited. Insurance would do its best to argue you were going too fast for the sidewalk and weren't visible enough.

Regardless the driver has an obligation to yield to anyone crossing the street. Sound like this person wasn't looking anyway and would have done the same thing if you were walking.

As has been mentioned above, this is why I avoid riding on sidewalks and when I do, I make to clear the intersection visually the best I can before I head across. Anyone making a left turn towards gets lots of attention.

Equipment Requirements


CVC 21201. (a) No person shall operate a bicycle on a roadway unless it is equipped with a brake which will enable the operator to make one braked wheel skid on dry, level, clean pavement.

(b) No person shall operate on the highway a bicycle equipped with handlebars so raised that the operator must elevate his hands above the level of his shoulders in order to grasp the normal steering grip area.

(1) A lamp emitting a white light that, while the bicycle is in motion, illuminates the highway, sidewalk, or bikeway in front of the bicyclist and is visible from a distance of 300 feet in front and from the sides of the bicycle.
(2) A red reflector on the rear that shall be visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful upper beams of headlamps on a motor vehicle.
(3) A white or yellow reflector on each pedal, shoe, or ankle visible from the front and rear of the bicycle from a distance of 200 feet.
(4) A white or yellow reflector on each side forward of the center of the bicycle, and a white or red reflector on each side to the rear of the center of the bicycle, except that bicycles that are equipped with reflectorized tires on the front and the rear need not be equipped with these side reflectors.
(e) A lamp or lamp combination, emitting a white light, attached to the operator and visible from a distance of 300 feet in front and from the sides of the bicycle, may be used in lieu of the lamp required by paragraph (1) of subdivision (d).
But FYI - Not Glendale. My friend got pulled over and cited by Glendale PD for riding on the sidewalk.
