SoCal bike incident blotter
I know it's kind of a morbid subject, but with all the dead bodies found on the Rio Hondo path lately, I almost feel like we should have a thread to keep each other informed of incidents etc. Whatchoo think?
I'll get it started:
https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/lo...217778851.html
Not a riding incident, but still relevant:
https://www.nbclosangeles.com/investi...218001401.html
Be safe out there!

From that news clip, sounds like he tried to fight back and struggled with 3 teens. Back in December 2012, I was on the Rio Hondo and did get mugged by two teens. But I did not try to fight back.

But the report does not say whether he suffered the injuries from the initial crash or the fight, I' guessing the crash.

Concealed Carry is on a county by county basis in Calif. LA county does not issue. * the permit is issued by the county but is good statewide. You can only apply in the county you live in.

According to the article I linked to it was a "tug of war" so I doubt he sustained any injuries from that. Not that fighting attackers is a good idea:
"Two of the men immediately took off after he crashed, Fournell said, but one tried to forcefully pull Fournell’s bicycle from under him. What proceeded was a “tug of war” on the bike for several minutes, but when Fournell refused to give up his bike, the man retreated as well, he said."

Sounds like he was a pretty well known guy. The location of the crash is reported only as "Lake Cuyamaca", but, as far as I can tell, he was with a group that was doing a counterclockwise loop north on Sunrise Highway and south on the 79. There's a 7-9% descent just past Lake Cuyamaca with some tight hairpin turns. And, if you're doing the loop in that direction starting from Pine Valley, it's basically the first technical descent you encounter after 3+ hours in the saddle.
"The injury was a solo crash. Roth hit an outcropping hard enough to break his helmet."

A crash in Newport Coast this Saturday morning was reported
August 3, 2013 | 5:45 p.m.
A female bicyclist was in serious condition after an accident on Newport Coast Road near the 73 Freeway Saturday morning, according to a news release from the Newport Beach Fire Department.
At 8:08 a.m., fire personnel responded to the scene and found a woman unconscious on the side of the road after she apparently fell from her bicycle, fire officials said.
The woman, whose name was not released, was about 40 years old and was being tended to by her husband and other bystanders when emergency personnel arrived, according to the release.

Hospitals and Clinics
First-responders suspected the woman had a head injury from the fall, despite the safety gear she was wearing, so they quickly immobilized her and took her to the Mission Hospital Trauma Center in Mission Viejo.
No further details on the woman's condition were available from the hospital, according to the release.
The cause of the incident is under investigation, but there is no indication a motor vehicle was involved, according to the release.
