    Yeah, join us for the first however far you feel like going. Or pizza. if you feel like doing 21 miles, that would encompass the whole 84 road race course (which is that first loop looking thing around lake mission viejo) and head back.

    yea I'm in! i'll ride with you guys til "R on El Toro", here i'll just make a "L" and head back to the Irvine station. total of 24miles by cars on google map.

    Thanks CommuteCommando, I updated the OP. I'm not much of a bike path fan, but in this case I like your route - it does avoid all these traffic lights and stop signs. It might be a good idea to take these few miles after the coffee stop at Pete's as "no-attack zone". Just stay together at a slower pace so nobody gets lost.

Just a suggestion if you don't feel like riding too long: start with us and ride to Vista Del Lago, but instead of turning up Vista Del Lago, keep going up Los Alisos, make a left on Marguerite (after crossing Santa Margarita Pkwy), then right on El Toro/Santiago Canyon.     yea we will see, it depends on how fast were riding and how tired i get, i have a flat bar hybrid (diamondback insight 1)....don't think i can keep up with yall road bike hardcore peeps.

    ok gotta bike 5-10 miles aday from now til the date, so i can build up my stamina.

    Just for the heck of it, I mapped out if I parked at oside train station and rode up to Marguerite n Avery is 40 miles. How is the San juan bike trail that goes from Dana point up?

    I have riden that area going down, but not up. The trail is pretty good, not a lot of joggers and dog walkers, but a few. Just be careful not to get "Stooged" by a kid with a surfboard. I called "on your left" and she turned to look. I ducked to avoid face plant with said surfboard. (She had it on her head safari style) Here is one of my routes. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3303259 At mile 13.8 I have it turning left and going through some residential areas to get to a bike trail under the 5. Most people take a right and take La Paz to Muirlands, which is direct and requires a little less climbing. I ususally have no broblem with cloverleaf intersections, but the ones under the 5 in So OC are nasty and I prefer to avoid them.

    BTW, I saw GP on the road today and he committed to the ride too (and I've got witnesses). Let's see if CalamariChris will be up to the challenge. I wonder what's happening with him, usually he doesn't miss rides that involve beer.

    I'm in, but no guarantees I'll make it past Peets. Still building strength after a March crash put me out of commission.

    Awesome loop. I've done many of these climbs in combination with one another, but never this complete list at once. I'm betting it's 5K feet of climbing, though.

    Thanks Uncle, you are in! Don't worry about the distance, ride as far as you feel like. I don't think the climbing is more than 4000' (but that's an estimate sucked out of a thumb). Anyway, most of it is in the first 20 miles.

    If I have to make an uneducated guess - we'd average around 15 mph over the entire route. I did a big part of this loop solo about 3 months ago and I averaged just under 15 mph. And I'm an average recreational weekender. As I said earlier - feel free to ride as much as you want. We can make a plan at the start and maybe split in 2 groups (faster and slower), depending on who shows up.

    I volunteer to be the designated boat anchor who will be lagging behind everyone else. I've always had more endurance than speed.

    As far as the Laguna Beach detour, I have only ridden it once. The ride up to the turn at Brodway, the car traffic was so thick that the cars were doing bike speed or slower. There was one guy in an SUV that was as thick as the traffic, but I guess I can handle that.

    Thanks Elvo. I changed the route so we'll backtrack on Portola. As for avoiding Turtle Ridge - I agree with you and I've changed that part too. The traffic light is slow and annoying. But Turtle Ridge cuts about a mile compared to going all the way to the bottom of NPC, so for those of us who might get dropped, I reckon it's still a good shortcut.
    As for Laguna Canyon - it's got a wide shoulder after the CA-73 so I wouldn't worry too much about it. But we must be careful when making that left turn at the end. Maybe just do the "sissy turn", i.e. cross Pavona and then use the pedestrian crossing.
